The Team

The Launceston General Hospital services the community of northern Tasmania and the group of anaesthetists forming the Department of Anaesthesia at the LGH provide care to patients of all ages for elective and emergency procedures including surgery, endoscopy, obstetrics and acute pain service. The anaesthetists work closely with all clinical specialties to afford the high-quality care which is constantly reviewed by stringent quality assurance processes and ongoing education at all levels.

The Role

The Deputy Director provides vital assistance to the Department Director in maintaining and supporting the key processes to achieve efficient running of this department. These responsibilities are fully outlined in the Statement of Duties and include:

  • Clinical leadership
  • Admin support
  • Roster oversight
  • Dept representation

Details of appointment

  • Fixed term full time, day worker (with on call) position, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from October 2026 for a three-year period.
  • notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant

Salary

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 $222,789 - $319,701 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging

Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $309,222 -$319,701 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2025

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

  • Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year
  • Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle or motor vehicle allowance of $28,786 per annum
  • Participation in Private Practice Scheme 35% or allowance in lieu of private practice schemes 35%. *Subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.
  • Management Allowance up to 7.5% is applied to this role.
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,974 per annum
  • Travel and relocation assistance support available up to $15,000 for eligible appointees from overseas, and up to $10,000 for appointees from interstate.
  • Professional development and accelerated pathways.
  • A range of leave entitlements, including study leave and Professional Development Support.
  • Fitness Passport – You, and your family can access 40+ fitness facilities across Tasmania for just $14.50 per week per person, or $28.05 for a family.
  • other allowances as applicable.

Eligibility

Eligibility: Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria as

  • Holds specialist registration; or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway; or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
