Applied Physics (AI Training)
About The Role
What if your years of physics training could directly influence how AI understands the physical world — from quantum mechanics to thermodynamics? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test cutting-edge AI models, expose their reasoning failures, and help build systems that genuinely respect the fundamental laws of nature.
This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for researchers and domain experts who want to do meaningful, intellectually stimulating work on their own schedule. No prior AI experience required — just deep physics expertise and a sharp analytical mind.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Design Advanced Problems — Craft PhD-level, open-ended physics problems that demand multi-step logical reasoning, rigorous mathematical derivation, and deep conceptual understanding across topics like quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and thermodynamics
- Author Ground-Truth Solutions — Write definitive, step-by-step "golden responses" where every physical constant, unit conversion, and logical inference is airtight and defensible
- Audit AI Reasoning — Evaluate AI-generated simulations, proofs, and explanations for physical consistency — identifying where models "hallucinate" physics that violates first principles like conservation of energy or momentum
- Refine Model Behavior — Provide structured, expert feedback that helps AI systems develop more robust physics-informed reasoning, including correct handling of boundary conditions, symmetry arguments, and physical constraints
Who You Are
- Holds a PhD (completed or near-final stage) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
- Deep command of the core pillars: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
- Exceptional at explaining complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured English
- Uncompromising attention to detail — units, scientific notation, dimensional analysis, and logical proof structure all matter to you
- Self-motivated and comfortable working independently on technical tasks
- No prior AI or data annotation experience required
Nice to Have
- Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance for technical content
- Proficiency with computational tools such as MATLAB, COMSOL, Python (NumPy/SciPy), or similar
- Background in physics education, research publishing, or technical writing
- Familiarity with AI or language model evaluation workflows
