Heritage Collections Supervisor

Preserve the stories of our region. Lead the care, development and promotion of Mackay’s Heritage Collection.

Mackay Regional Council is seeking a Heritage Collections Supervisor to coordinate, develop and care for the Mackay Regional Council Heritage Collection while supporting the delivery of efficient, reliable and engaging library and information services to the Mackay community. In this role, you’ll work alongside your team—leading by example, supporting daily operations, and ensuring works are completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Coordinate and oversee all aspects of the library heritage collection to support quality service delivery and effective use of resources
  • Develop and promote heritage resources, programs and collections for the Mackay community
  • Provide local history research, reference guidance and assistance to clients
  • Oversee the conservation and preservation of heritage collection materials to help retain their historic value
  • Provide timely information and advice about the strategic and operational performance of heritage collections and services
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including local museums, historical societies, State Library of Queensland and public library networks
  • Lead, develop and empower staff to support an effective, multi-skilled and continuously improving team
  • Contribute to strategic and operational planning for library services and assist with implementation within your area of responsibility
  • Undertake other responsibilities as delegated within the scope of the position

About You

You’re a knowledgeable and community-focused library or heritage collections professional with strong customer service, communication and stakeholder engagement skills. You understand the importance of preserving local history and making heritage resources accessible, relevant and engaging for the community.

You’re confident supporting staff, solving problems, conducting reference enquiries and working collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders. You value innovation, continuous improvement and the responsible care of historical materials. Qualifications, Licences & Tickets

Essential

  • Qualification in Library and Information Services or equivalent, or extensive experience in the management of library collections
  • Working with Children Blue Card

Desirable

  • Current QLD “C” Class Driver Licence, if required for the position

You Bring Experience In

  • Developing, maintaining and promoting heritage collections
  • Cataloguing processes, preservation, conservation, accessioning practices and archival requirements
  • Delivering high-quality customer service in a library, collections or community service environment
  • Conducting reference enquiries and providing reliable information services
  • Working with current and emerging issues relevant to public library services and heritage collections
  • Building positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Supporting or leading staff in a team environment

Key Skills & Knowledge

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Well-developed liaison, interpersonal, advocacyand communication skills
  • Ability to conduct effective reference enquiries and deliver a high-quality reference service
  • Knowledge of public library resources and systems
  • Knowledge of current affairs and the local community
  • Knowledge of heritage collection development, conservation and preservation practices and archival requirements
  • Ability to maximise the benefits of new technology and innovative practices
  • Ability to interpret, implement and develop operational procedures and practices
  • Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of statutory requirements relevant to Library Services, including local government, equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination requirements
