About the Role

We are seeking experienced Systems Engineers to lead and coordinate design, integration, test and evaluation activities for Defence capability systems within a CASG integrated workforce. Operating under broad direction, you will exercise technical authority, professional judgement and initiative to influence engineering outcomes, manage technical risk, and assure compliance with Defence engineering governance, assurance and legislative frameworks.

The role requires in-depth knowledge of systems engineering across acquisition and sustainment, close consultation with contracted support service providers, and engagement with key stakeholders across Defence to ensure capability requirements are met and engineering artefacts are robust, compliant and fit for purpose.

Key Activities

  • Lead and coordinate systems engineering activities across assigned systems, with a focus on safety, fitness for service and regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct requirements and specification development, ensuring requirements are traceable to system-level capability needs and operational use cases.
  • Provide governance and oversight of support contractor engineering activities, assuring the quality, compliance and consistency of artefacts across engineering requirements, design changes, configuration baselines, technical certification, test and evaluation, and integration.
  • Develop, review and endorse complex engineering documentation, including system specifications, design packages, engineering management plans and technical risk registers.
  • Assist in the preparation and conduct of Configuration Control Boards (CCBs), Engineering Review Boards (ERBs) and System Safety Working Groups (SSWGs).
  • Evaluate delivered contractor artefacts and CDRL deliverables against approved requirements and applicable legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks, providing recommendations and supporting corrective actions.
  • Identify, assess and manage current and emerging engineering risks affecting capability delivery, and provide recommendations for risk acceptance.
  • Support system security (cyber security), quality management, technical risk management and system safety activities, including supporting whole-of-system certification and design acceptance.
  • Achieve and exercise Technical Authority delegation commensurate with experience, knowledge and qualifications.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering technical capability development and promoting best practice engineering processes.

Requirements

  • AGSVA security clearance (current).
  • Engineering degree in Electronic and Communications, Software, Computer Systems or related discipline (Engineers Australia recognised / Washington Accord).
  • Member of Engineers Australia; Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng), or eligibility to attain chartered status, highly regarded.
  • 4+ years across solution architecture, requirements management, systems design, risk management, testing and governance.
  • Experience in a CASG/Defence program as a systems engineer across acquisition and/or sustainment, with knowledge of the One Defence Capability System.
  • Experience working within a technical regulatory or assurance framework (ICTAP/ETAP, LMSM, DASR, CASG EAF, DSwMS).
  • ASDEFCON suite experience, including review of contract deliverables and engineering management plans (CEMP/SEMP).
  • Knowledge or experience of Defence C4I systems, requirements management tools (e.g. DOORS) and software applications.
  • Strong understanding of configuration management, modern networking, computers and operating systems.
  • Advanced technical writing skills and strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to provide authoritative, balanced and reasoned engineering advice to project leadership and senior stakeholders.
