Technical Operations Supervisor - Concrete Testing Laboratory
Position Overview
An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced concrete industry professional to lead the day-to-day operations of a high-performing concrete testing laboratory and field testing team.
This role combines technical leadership, people management, quality assurance, and operational oversight within a modern laboratory environment featuring advanced automated testing technology. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising laboratory personnel and field technicians while ensuring all testing activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with relevant Australian Standards and NATA requirements.
This is primarily an office and laboratory-based leadership role, with occasional involvement in field testing activities when required.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of laboratory technicians, field testers, and contractors.
- Coordinate daily workloads and resource allocation to meet testing requirements and client expectations.
- Foster a positive safety culture and maintain high levels of team engagement and accountability.
- Conduct performance management, coaching, and training activities.
- Support workforce planning, recruitment, and succession development initiatives.
Laboratory Operations
- Oversee the day-to-day operation of a highly automated concrete and aggregates testing laboratory.
- Ensure efficient processing of 300-400 concrete samples per day through robotic crushing and testing systems.
- Monitor laboratory productivity, turnaround times, and quality metrics.
- Manage equipment maintenance schedules, calibration requirements, and operational performance.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and testing outcomes.
Technical & Quality Assurance
- Ensure compliance with NATA accreditation requirements, Australian Standards, and internal quality systems.
- Develop towards becoming a NATA Signatory and provide technical leadership across laboratory operations.
- Review testing data, reports, and quality documentation.
- Investigate non-conformances and implement corrective actions where required.
- Maintain high standards of accuracy, traceability, and technical integrity across all testing activities.
Concrete & Aggregate Testing Oversight
- Provide technical oversight of concrete strength testing, shrinkage testing, trial batching, aggregate testing, and associated laboratory activities.
- Support field testing operations and provide technical guidance to field personnel.
- Assist in troubleshooting testing issues and resolving technical challenges.
- Ensure testing methodologies remain compliant with industry requirements and best practices.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote and maintain a strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
- Ensure all laboratory and field activities comply with company policies and legislative requirements.
- Participate in audits, risk assessments, and safety improvement initiatives.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Demonstrated experience within the concrete, construction materials, or civil testing industry.
- Previous experience leading teams within a laboratory, technical, or operational environment.
- Strong understanding of concrete and aggregate testing procedures.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
Desirable
- NATA Signatory status or the capability to obtain Signatory accreditation.
- Experience managing laboratory quality systems.
- Knowledge of Australian Standards relating to concrete and aggregate testing.
- Experience with automated laboratory equipment and testing technologies.
- Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques or relevant tertiary qualification.
Working Hours & Benefits
- Typical start time of 5:00am with finishes generally around 2:30pm.
- Consistent overtime opportunities available.
- Typical working week of 50-55 hours, with occasional Saturday work.
- Strong earning potential, $110,000-$128,000 per annum through overtime, penalties, and incentive payments.
