St Brendan-Shaw College is looking for a suitably qualified and experienced Social Worker or Counsellor to join our Pastoral Care Team 1 day per week to work in conjunction with our existing Social Worker.

0.2 FTE / 1 day per week

St Brendan-Shaw College is a Catholic, co-educational secondary school located in Devonport catering for students from Years 7 to 12. The College is committed to creating a learning environment that fosters excellence, compassion and service in our students.

The College is seeking applications from suitably experienced candidates who have the ability to work in the Pastoral Care Team to provide quality professional support services to students and their families and are committed to making a difference within the secondary school setting. The successful candidate is required to promote and support the learning, social, emotional and behavioural needs of students using evidence-based interventions, case management, liaison with external agencies and consultation.

As a Social Worker / Counsellor, you will:

  • Undertake cognitive, social, emotional and behavioural assessment of students where appropriately trained, report the results of assessments and interventions to parents and teachers, and collaborate to improve learning and wellbeing outcomes
  • Provide counselling to students, individually and in groups, including appropriate short-term therapeutic interventions undertaken within the scope of training, experience and supervision.
  • Maintain confidential case files for all students obtaining counselling or assessment in accordance with organisational and professional requirements
  • Work collaboratively with learning support teams, parents and caregivers, and other agencies, to develop appropriate school based support for students
  • Support and assist students and their families to address truancy, poor and non-attendance issues working to improve learning and engagement with school community
  • Support and collaborate with teachers to deal effectively with student needs

Some of the skills and experience we are looking for are:

  • A Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) approved / accredited program of study or equivalent and Mental Health Practitioner accreditation (essential), or An Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) approved / accredited program of study such as 4 year Bachelor degree qualifying in Social Work or equivalent (desirable)
  • Eligibility for PACFA Clinical Membership or equivalent (essential), or Eligibility for AASW membership (desirable)
  • 4 years relevant work experience (essential)
  • Experience providing support to children and young people and their families to address social, emotional, learning and/or behavioural development needs

Salary will be in accordance with the Tasmanian Catholic Education Single Enterprise Agreement 2024.
