The Role

The acquisition of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavor for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting-edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades to come.

You will work in the Platform Systems branch of ASA, reporting to the Materials Corrosion and Coatings Technical Lead within the Naval Architecture directorate.

As a Senior Technologist – Structural Integrity, you will:

  • Draw upon knowledge of a structural integrity to apply subject matter knowledge to ensure technical compliance and safety
  • Communicate and engage stakeholders.
  • Plan, lead, develop, and, manage the Australian Submarine Agency capability to deliver structural integrity programs while exercising a considerable degree of independence.
  • Exercise sound decision making and judgement to provide expert policy advice.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of structural integrity and be responsible for the development, implementation, compliance and review of procedures.
  • Be accountable under broad direction to perform and achieve very complex technical work within an integrated workforce.
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and the Australian Submarine Agency’s mission and policy requirements.

  1. Working closely with Defence and government officials. This is a true whole-of-government effort that can open up a variety of different career opportunities.
  2. Working directly with our US and UK counterparts to develop our knowledge, governance structures and industrial capabilities. With an increased forward presence of Royal Navy and US Navy Nuclear-Powered Submarines in Australia, this may mean working closely on site, and/or travel or relocation overseas.

As a Senior Technologist – Corrosion, you will:

  • Draw upon knowledge of materials and corrosion management to ensure technical compliance and evaluate performance of corrosion management strategies and technologies
  • Exercise sound decision making and judgement to provide expert policy advice, developing implementing, and reviewing policies and procedures.
  • Plan, lead, develop, manage and evaluate the Australian Submarine Agency capability to deliver technical programs in corrosion management while exercising a considerable degree of independence.
  • Be accountable under broad direction to perform and achieve very complex technical work within an integrated workforce.
  • You will develop an in-depth knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and the Australian Submarine Agency’s mission and policy requirements.

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in ASA as a Building Capability Payment (BCP). This enables ASA to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the ASA Enterprise Agreement, for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to ASA capability. About our Team

The Program Engineering Branch works within the Australian Submarine Agency to integrate Engineering and Technical functions into the ASA Nuclear Powered Submarine (NPS) and Infrastructure delivery programs. This is the sharp end of ensuring sovereign technical control of the NPS capability and key to maintaining design intent through life of the NPS, its support infrastructure and equipment, and across the supply chain.

The branch spans all the NPS technical domains, is predominately based at the delivery locations, and works closely with our partners in Australian industry, and the relevant US and UK government departments.   • Management skills to plan and deliver critical very complex technical activities with a level of independence, under broad direction in structural integrity by working to agreed priorities and outcomes.
  • Leadership skills to motivate and mentor the technical workforce, aligning complementary skills, providing expert advice and assistance to team members performing technical work;
  • Collaborative skills to engage with key stakeholders, communicating effectively to identify opportunities, achieve outcomes and facilitate cooperation; and
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to deliver high-quality and concise technical advice;

Our Senior Technologist – Corrosion ideal candidate will bring the following attributes and skills to the role:

  • Specialist knowledge to provide high level technical/professional advice on specific issues related to corrosion and corrosion management, promoting continuous improvement and innovation in a complex regulatory framework;
