What you will be doing

As a Work Capacity Specialist you are responsible for assessing, determining, and managing a worker’s work capacity and associated entitlement to weekly compensation, ensuring decisions are:

  • Legislatively compliant (Workers Compensation Act 1987 & 1998 Act).
  • Evidence-based (medical + vocational).
  • Fair, consistent, and defensible
  • Capacity for work.
  • Suitable employment options.
  • Earnings capacity.
  • Entitlement to weekly payments.

Responsibilities and duties

  • Make legislatively compliant work capacity decisions affecting weekly benefits.
  • Assess and interpret medical and vocational evidence.
  • Determine capacity, suitable employment, and earning ability.
  • Ensure procedural fairness and clear communication.
  • Conduct ongoing reviews and reassessments.
  • Manage internal reviews and dispute escalation.
  • Maintain strong governance, audit readiness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Contribute to the achievement of organisational objectives by aligning work capacity assessment processes and driving consistent, efficient decision-making outcomes.
  • Support the translation of strategic and operational plans into practical work capacity and claims-related action plans, monitoring progress and ensuring timely, quality completion.
  • Identify, analyse, and enhance work capacity and entitlement processes to improve decision quality, compliance, and overall claims performance, while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Where appropriate, support the streamlining and optimisation of work capacity and assessment processes to reduce delays, improve efficiency, and strengthen the quality and defensibility of decisions.
  • Actively contribute to the development and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives, frameworks, and strategies, in collaboration with broader technical and Continuous Improvement teams, to enhance business performance.
  • Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentoring to team members and stakeholders to uplift capability in work capacity decision-making, supporting performance, development, and succession planning.

The skills you’ll be doing

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Nursing, or related field is desirable.

Required skills and Experience

  • Understanding the Workers Compensation Legislation, regulations and guidelines.
  • Strong understanding of the governing standards of practice.
  • Strong understanding and Agent remuneration drivers.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Highly developed self-management and organisation skills.
