About the role
As a Claims Specialist in the General Liability Claims team, you will manage a portfolio of insurance claims from end to end, delivering timely, defensible, and client-centred outcomes. You will oversee all aspects of the claims process, including policy interpretation, reserving, negotiation, and resolution, while supporting VMIA’s purpose of building a confident and resilient Victoria.
Working within the Risk, Insurance, and Claims Solutions Division (RICS), you will contribute to best-practice claims management tailored to the Victorian public sector. Your role will play a key part in supporting client recovery, mitigating risk exposure, and maintaining VMIA’s reputation for service excellence.
Key responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of liability claims from initiation through to resolution, ensuring defensible and client-focused outcomes.
- Interpret policy coverage and legislative frameworks to assess indemnity, liability, and claim exposure.
- Establish, monitor, and adjust claim reserves while assessing and negotiating settlements and recovery opportunities.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, legal providers, mediators, and other stakeholders.
- Manage sensitive and complex client interactions, including mediations and settlement forums.
- Collaborate with internal teams across Claims, Legal, Strategy, Operations & Insights, Underwriting, and Risk Advisory functions.
- Ensure claims documentation and records comply with regulatory, audit, and governance requirements.
- Contribute to process improvements, uplift initiatives, and knowledge-sharing activities across the team.
- Identify trends and insights within claims portfolios to support product development and improved claims responses.
- Promote a positive, accountable, and learning-focused team culture aligned with VMIA values.
Who you work with
You will work closely with the Claims Portfolio Manager, Head of Claims Practice, and peers across Claims Practice, Historical Claims, and Claims Strategy teams to support the delivery and continuous improvement of claims services and products. You will also collaborate with Underwriters, Risk Advisors, Legal teams, and Operations & Insights colleagues to provide integrated solutions for clients. Externally, you will engage with VMIA clients, sector stakeholders, insurers, barristers, mediators, and third-party service providers to support effective claims resolution and recovery outcomes.
What we are looking for
We are looking for a client-focused and resilient claims professional with strong experience in liability claims management within insurance, legal, or financial services environments. You bring sound judgement, analytical thinking, and the ability to manage complex and sensitive matters while delivering high-quality service outcomes.
You are an effective communicator and relationship builder who can confidently engage with a broad range of stakeholders in high-pressure situations. You are adaptable, solutions-oriented, and committed to continuous improvement, collaboration, and professional accountability. Experience navigating legal complexity, regulatory frameworks, and public sector environments will be highly regarded.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in end-to-end claims management or a related field.
- Experience managing liability claims, including combined liability, employment practices liability, class actions, and direct claimant matters.
- Background in commercial insurance, legal practice, employment law, or financial services.
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
- Experience using Claims Management systems and working within governance frameworks.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively in high-pressure environments.
- Understanding of public sector environments and risk management principles is desirable.
- Associate/Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (desirable).
- Relevant qualifications in Business, Commerce, Finance, Law, or related disciplines are advantageous but not essential.
- Must meet Fit and Proper Person requirements under APRA guidelines.

Salary Information
At VMIA, we offer competitive salaries based on the role's classification and your skills and experience. Typically, new employees start at the minimum of the salary range, however, consideration may be given to starting above the minimum of the band should you demonstrate extensive experience in a similar role or possess unique and desirable skills and capabilities required to perform the role.
