Hunter New England Local Health District - Rural Generalists – Visiting Medical Officer FFS or Sessional appointment

The Rural and Regional Health Services Unit of Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) is seeking Rural Generalists with advanced skills in Emergency Medicine to provide Emergency Department coverage across our rural and regional health sites, including Moree, Glen Innes, Inverell, Gunnedah and Narrabri.

    Glen Innes District Hospital

Glen Innes District Hospital is located within the Hunter New England Local Health District, part of the Glen Innes Severn Shire local government area. The facility is a 24-bed Level 3 rural hospital, incorporating a two-bay, four-bed Emergency Department (ED). In addition to emergency care, the hospital provides medical, obstetric, and day surgery services. Within the ED, a Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) is available onsite on Fridays and is strongly supported by Armidale Rural Referral Hospital’s Emergency Department. The Emergency Department is currently undergoing a $50 million redevelopment, which will deliver a modern, purpose-built ED designed to support flexible clinical services and contemporary models of care for the Glen Innes community now and into the future. Emergency services will continue to operate at a Level 3 role delineation, managing minor injuries, as well as resuscitation and stabilisation prior to transfer to higher-level facilities.

    Gunnedah District Hospital

Located just 45 minutes from Tamworth Airport, with a population of approximately 13,000 Gunnedah is a vibrant and welcoming community offering outstanding lifestyle opportunities for individuals and families. Gunnedah District Hospital provides a broad range of services to the local community, including community health, emergency care, general medicine, obstetrics, and day surgery. For services not available onsite, Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital is the primary referral pathway.

    Narrabri District Hospital

Narrabri Hospital is a rural health facility of approximately 28–30 beds, providing 24-hour emergency care, inpatient services, and a wide range of specialties including general medicine, surgery, maternity, paediatrics, and allied health services. The Emergency Department operates 24/7, supported by Visiting Medical Officers and a multidisciplinary team, with the capability to manage a broad mix of presentations in a rural setting.

The hospital maintains strong clinical linkages through established referral pathways to Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital supported by telehealth and retrieval services for higher-acuity cases. Narrabri offers a close-knit community lifestyle with strong agricultural and regional industry ties, making it an attractive location for clinicians seeking meaningful professional and lifestyle balance.

    Inverell District Hospital

With a busy Emergency Department, strong demand across general practice, and a community that values consistency, Inverell is ready to welcome clinicians who want meaningful work, authentic collegiality, and a lifestyle that gives back more than it takes. Rural Generalists with advanced skills in Emergency Medicine and General Practitioners with a strong interest in emergency medicine to deliver comprehensive primary care, inpatient and emergency care to the Inverell community are encouraged to apply.
