The Role

The ABC is looking for a Political Producer to play a senior role in the planning, production and output of ABC’s Continuous News platforms. This includes live TV programming, such as “Afternoon Briefing” and other TV, digital video and audio content from Parliament House.

The Job

  • Under limited direction you will plan and produce news content in line with ABC Editorial Policies; generate, suggest and develop ideas for dynamic audience-focused news coverage for broadcast and digital formats and platforms.
  • Along with the Supervising Producer oversee the production of Afternoon Briefing and other bulletin rundowns, updated on-air rundowns and ensure the immediacy of continuous news output.
  • Collaborate with producers, reporters, presenters and studio crew on planning, producing and delivering content for the ABC’s Continuous News platforms, as well as trouble shooting bulletin production and output problems and issues when they arise.
  • Output on-air coverage, including news bulletins, rolling coverage, breaking news and special programming, which may include providing direction and guidance to on-air presenters, studio crew, and editorial staff in the control room environment.
  • Develop and maintain strong federal political contacts across party lines to ensure access to key voices on a range of stories.
  • Book guests for Continuous News (video and audio), write briefs, develop and maintain strong contacts.

About You

You are a seasoned News professional with experience in and a passion for Australian politics.

You'll Have

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or demonstrated equivalent skills, knowledge and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate original political interview ideas and stories, and to secure senior political talent for interviews on issues of national significance.
  • Strong editorial skills and judgement, as well as a proven track record in television news/current affairs.
  • A sound awareness and understanding of developing content for all platforms (video, audio, on-demand digital and social).
  • Advanced ability in planning, producing and delivering innovative news programming with an audience focus; demonstrated ability to produce clear and strong, editorial content with accuracy and in accordance with Editorial Policies and Style Guides.
  • Demonstrated experience in the control room outputting live news bulletins including live events, live reporter crosses, studio interviews as well as breaking news and rolling coverage.
