Applied Physics (AI Training)
About The Role
What if your deep expertise in physics could directly shape how AI understands the fundamental laws of the universe? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test cutting-edge AI models — probing their reasoning, exposing their blind spots, and helping ensure they respect principles like conservation of energy, quantum mechanics, and electrodynamics.
This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for researchers and domain experts who want to do meaningful, high-impact work on their own schedule. No prior AI experience required — just mastery of physics and a rigorous analytical mind.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Design Advanced Physics Problems — Craft complex, open-ended problems at PhD qualifying exam level, requiring multi-step logical reasoning and precise mathematical derivation across topics like quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and electrodynamics
- Author Ground-Truth Solutions — Write rigorous, step-by-step "golden responses" where every physical constant, unit conversion, and logical step is exactly right
- Audit AI Reasoning — Evaluate AI-generated proofs and simulations for physical consistency, identifying where models "hallucinate" physics that violates first principles
- Refine Model Behaviour — Provide structured, expert feedback that improves an AI's ability to apply physics-informed reasoning — including boundary conditions, symmetry arguments, and conservation laws
- Work Independently — Complete task-based assignments fully asynchronously, on your own schedule
Who You Are
- Holds a PhD (completed or near completion) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
- Deep command of the core pillars: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
- Exceptional analytical writing ability — you can explain a complex derivation clearly, precisely, and in structured English
- Uncompromising attention to detail when it comes to units, scientific notation, and proof logic
- Self-motivated and reliable when working independently without close supervision
- No prior AI or machine learning experience required
Nice to Have
- Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance for research outputs
- Proficiency with computational tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL
- Background in physics education, academic publishing, or technical writing
- Familiarity with AI tools or large language models as an end user
