Mechanical Designer / Technical Writer

We are partnering with our client, a progressive local government council, to recruit a versatile Mechanical Design & Technical Writer. Reporting directly to the Principal Engineer, this unique hybrid role sits within a collaborative engineering group tasked with delivering high-quality, safe, and compliant community infrastructure and operational assets.
Responsibilities
- Technical Design: Create, modify, and review detailed mechanical drawings and designs using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD), ensuring full compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Technical Writing: Develop, update, and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including user manuals, operating instructions, maintenance guides, and safety protocols, converting complex engineering data into clear, user-friendly material.
- Risk Assessment: Conduct thorough technical risk assessments on drawings and mechanical systems to evaluate safety, reliability, and performance. Recommend and document design modifications or mitigation strategies to address identified risks.
- Collaboration: Participate actively in multi-disciplinary design reviews, bridging the gap between technical engineering staff and non-technical stakeholders to ensure alignment on project standards.
- Continuous Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities to optimise the quality and efficiency of Council's technical documentation and risk assessment frameworks.
Requirements
- Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or a related field.
- Proven proficiency utilizing industry-standard CAD design software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) to interpret and analyze complex technical drawings.
- Strong technical writing track record alongside practical experience conducting formal technical risk assessments and developing mitigation strategies.
- Solid familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry compliance standards related to mechanical design.
- Exceptional attention to detail, problem-solving capabilities, and the communication skills required to present technical data clearly to diverse audiences.
Nice to Have
- Prior experience in a similar role within an engineering, manufacturing, or public sector infrastructure environment.
- Deep knowledge of mechanical systems, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Exposure to project management tools and structured engineering techniques.
This role is based in Western Sydney, a 6 month contract to start off. It can pay between $65 - 75 incl. Super per hour to the right candidate.
