Environmental Engineering — AI Data Trainer
About The Role
We're looking for environmental engineers to help train and improve advanced AI models on complex, real-world engineering problems. Your deep domain knowledge will directly shape how AI reasons through challenges in water treatment, air quality management, hazardous waste remediation, and environmental compliance — making a tangible impact on how the next generation of AI systems understands your field.
This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. Work on your own schedule, on problems that actually matter.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Design Complex Engineering Problems — Craft advanced, multi-step challenges spanning contaminant transport, mass balance in treatment plants, hydrology, Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), and more
- Author Gold-Standard Solutions — Write rigorous, step-by-step technical solutions — including chemical dosage calculations, hydraulic flow models, and pollutant dispersion analyses — that serve as ground-truth benchmarks for AI training
- Audit AI Outputs — Critically evaluate AI-generated remediation plans, environmental impact statements, and mathematical proofs for technical accuracy, regulatory compliance, and safety
- Sharpen AI Reasoning — Identify specific failure modes in model logic — such as incorrect stoichiometry in biological treatment processes or missed secondary environmental impacts — and provide structured feedback that improves how the model thinks
Who You Are
- Pursuing or holding a Master's or PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering (environmental focus), or a closely related discipline
- Strong foundational knowledge in one or more core areas: aquatic chemistry, wastewater process design, air quality engineering, or hazardous waste remediation
- Able to communicate complex engineering and ecological concepts clearly and precisely in written form
- Meticulous attention to detail — especially when checking unit conversions, chemical equations, and regulatory compliance logic
- No prior AI experience required — your engineering expertise is what matters
Nice to Have
- Experience with data annotation, data quality review, or evaluation systems
- Familiarity with environmental modeling software (e.g., AERMOD, SWMM, Visual MINTEQ)
- Working knowledge of EPA regulations, ISO 14001, or other environmental compliance frameworks
Why Join Us
- Work on cutting-edge AI projects alongside world-leading research labs
- Fully remote and async — work when and where it suits you
- Freelance autonomy with meaningful, intellectually engaging work
- Gain firsthand exposure to how large language models are built and trained
- Potential for ongoing work and contract extension
