Applied Physics (AI Training)
About The Role
What if your years of physics expertise could directly shape how AI understands the fundamental laws of the universe? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test cutting-edge AI models — exposing gaps in their physical reasoning and helping ensure they don't hallucinate thermodynamics or violate conservation of energy.
This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. No AI background required — just deep mastery of physics and a rigorous, analytical mind.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Design advanced, open-ended physics problems at PhD qualifying exam level — requiring multi-step reasoning, mathematical derivation, and first-principles thinking
- Author rigorous "golden response" solutions with flawless step-by-step derivations, correct units, and precise physical constants
- Audit AI-generated solutions, simulations, and proofs for physical consistency — identifying where models hallucinate physics that violates fundamental laws
- Provide structured, expert feedback to strengthen AI reasoning around boundary conditions, conservation laws, and domain-specific constraints
- Work independently and asynchronously — fully on your own schedule
Who You Are
- PhD completed or in final stages in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
- Deep command of core physics: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
- Exceptional ability to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured written English
- Uncompromising attention to detail — units, notation, and logical flow of a proof all matter to you
- Self-motivated and consistent when working independently
- No prior AI or data experience required
Nice to Have
- Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance workflows
- Proficiency with computational tools such as MATLAB, COMSOL, Python (NumPy/SciPy), or similar
- Background in research-level problem design or academic assessment
- Familiarity with AI language models or prompt evaluation as an end user
Why Join Us
- Work directly with leading AI research labs on some of the most technically challenging problems in AI development
- Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
- Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, task-based work
- Make a tangible impact on how AI reasons about the physical world
- Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
