Position

Fairfield City Open Libraries is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the stories of Fairfield City, its people, places, cultures, and history. We’re looking for a Senior Local Studies Officer to help safeguard our city’s heritage and make it accessible to the community.

In this role, you will lead the development, care, and promotion of our local history collections, both physical and digital. You’ll manage heritage materials, oversee digitisation programs, support research enquiries, curate exhibitions, and capture contemporary stories to build a rich and enduring historical record. You’ll also deliver community workshops and contribute to cross‑Library and Council projects.

This position suits someone with strong research skills, excellent organisation, and a passion for connecting people with local history. The role includes participation in frontline library services as part of the weekly roster, including occasional evening and weekend work. This position works across two locations Whitlam Library and Fairfield City Museum & Gallery.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL (minimum)

  • Qualifications in Library and Information Studies, Information Science, Museum Studies, Archives or a related field.

Knowledge And Skills

ESSENTIAL (minimum)

  • Qualifications in Library and Information Studies, Information Science, Museum Studies, Archives or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and developing staff teams with proven capacity to play a leadership role in the provision of services and influence cultural change.
  • Demonstrated ability in research and written communication including report writing and knowledge of the history and cultural heritage of Fairfield City.
  • Demonstrated experience managing collections that document the history and development of local communities across NSW, both physical and digital in a public library environment or similar, including an understanding of digitisation, metadata and cataloguing.
  • Proven ability to engage with internal and external partners and communicate respectfully and effectively with people of all ages and from diverse backgrounds, cultures and abilities.
  • Proven ability to provide excellence in customer service, with the ability to confidently and proactivity engage with library customers and value-add to the library customer experience.
  • Demonstrated effective time management and prioritisation skills with the ability to balance competing workloads and deliver within deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, the ability to motivate others and foster a team environment.
  • Current NSW Driver’s Licence - Class C, and preparedness to drive as part of the role.
  • Demonstrated understanding of EEO and WH&S.
  • Experience in working within a budget.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Fairfield City local government area, and its history and culture.
  • Experience with Spydus Library Management System.
  • Experience with Recollect Collection Management System.

Salary & Employment Conditions

  • Permanent position, 70 hours per fortnight
  • This position is a Grade 5, salary range is $86,482 p.a. with progression to $97,374 p.a. on demonstrated competencies, with performance progression to $101,305 p.a.
  • Flexible working hours are available.
