The AMA is the professional body for all doctors in Australia, promoting and protecting the professional interests of doctors and the healthcare needs of their patients. It has long been recognised as one of Australia’s most trusted and ethical associations and as such is the most influential voice on health matters for doctors, trainee doctors and the community.
AMA SA is seeking a forward-thinking Independent Director who will contribute to the overall governance, strategic direction and management of the association. This non-remunerated Non-Executive Director of AMA SA provides an opportunity for the successful applicant to utilise their skills and experience to make a tangible impact by helping to shape AMA SA’s direction and effectiveness. Working collaboratively with the Chair, Board and CEO, this role ensures the delivery of accountable corporate performance in accordance with the organisation’s goals and objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- champion AMA SA's commitment to trust, maintaining transparency and integrity in all aspects of governance and decision making;
- actively promote and embed collaboration by fostering a cooperative and unified environment within AMA SA;
- support inclusion by nurturing a diverse and vibrant community where every voice is heard, respected and valued, ensuring equitable opportunities and outcomes for all;
- provide strategic direction for the organisation, participating in the development and review of the AMA SA’s strategies and objectives to ensure their alignment to vision and mission;
- monitor legal compliance and governance frameworks across AMA SA’s operations, ensuring adherence to its constitution and regulatory obligations;
- identify principal risks facing the organisation and ensure appropriate controls and monitoring systems are in place to mitigate and manage them;
- facilitate effective communication and engagement with members and stakeholders, coordinating the development and implementation of policies and procedures that enhance stakeholder relationships.

Applications are sought from appropriately qualified legal professionals with demonstrated experience in legal or governance roles preferably with an understanding of the legal and regulatory frameworks applicable to the AMA SA. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, together with an understanding of current issues and opportunities within the medical field, will be critical for success in this role.
The successful candidate will be collaborative, analytical, embrace innovative thinking and possess the ability to think independently and offer constructive feedback, all while maintaining high levels of integrity and ethical standards.
