AEMO’s System Planning team leads medium to long term power system planning to ensure security and reliability in the National Electricity Market (NEM). The team delivers the Integrated System Plan (ISP) a 20-year roadmap for the east coast power system alongside key system security assessments, including System Strength and Inertia Reports.

Their analysis informs major infrastructure investment and supports decision making across industry and government, playing a critical role in designing a secure, renewable ready power system.

About The Role

Due to an internal promotion, we have a vacancy for a Specialist who will deliver high-quality planning advice through strong modelling and economic judgement, translating complex insights into practical, regionally relevant outcomes. You will provide technical expertise, quality assurance, and evidence-based advice that influences investment and decision making.

The role leads the development and communication of long-term energy forecasts using a mix of methods, including optimisation, machine learning, statistical, econometric, and engineering approaches, to support transmission planning, investment, and policy.

You will also provide technical leadership, coaching and mentoring analysts to deliver high quality outcomes, with a strong focus on building capability and maintaining excellence in power system modelling and investment analysis.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Lead and deliver major cross functional projects, including methodology development, technical analysis, quality control, reporting, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Manage concurrent projects, adapting to changing pressures while identifying and communicating risks.
  • Produce clear, high-quality reports, presentations, and briefing materials.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, collaborating and presenting complex analytical insights.
  • Provide expert technical advice and represent the team in forums and working groups.
  • Mentor analysts, support team capability, and contribute to planning, resourcing, and continuous improvement.

You’ll be a proactive, team-oriented contributor who thrives in a collaborative, tight knit team of seven, with strong communication, influencing capability, and a responsive, can-do approach. With experience leading projects or stepping into leadership responsibilities, you bring strong technical capability, critical thinking, and the ability to coordinate complex workstreams and deliver outcomes within tight timelines.

What You Will Bring To The Role

Education

  • Appropriate tertiary and/or postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline (engineering, economics, physics, data science.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Extensive experience in market simulation, forecasting tools, and methodologies, with strong data interpretation skills.
  • Good understanding of Australian energy market frameworks, including regulatory, investment, and reliability assessment approaches.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex analysis clearly through high-quality technical reports and presentations.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence, negotiate, and build lasting relationships.
  • Adaptable and solutions-focused, able to work at pace and apply fit-for-purpose approaches to deliver timely outcomes.
  • Experience with advanced analytical tools such as Databricks, PLEXOS, RStudio, Python, and Power BI.
