Applied Physics Specialist (AI Training)

About The Role

What if your years of physics expertise could directly shape how AI understands the fundamental laws of the universe? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test cutting-edge AI models — exposing the gaps in their physical reasoning and helping ensure they respect the principles that govern reality itself.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role designed for deep subject-matter experts. No prior AI experience needed — just a mastery of physics and a sharp, rigorous mind.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Design challenging problems — Craft advanced, open-ended physics problems at PhD qualifying exam level, requiring multi-step reasoning, mathematical derivation, and first-principles thinking
  • Author gold-standard solutions — Write rigorous, step-by-step responses that serve as ground-truth benchmarks, with flawless attention to physical constants, units, and logical flow
  • Audit AI reasoning — Evaluate AI-generated solutions and simulations for physical consistency, identifying where models "hallucinate" results that violate conservation laws, boundary conditions, or established theory
  • Provide structured feedback — Help improve AI reasoning across domains like quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, and classical mechanics by documenting failure modes and suggesting corrective guidance

Who You Are

  • PhD completed or in final stages in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
  • Deep mastery across core physics pillars: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
  • Exceptional analytical writing skills — you can explain complex derivations and phenomena with clarity and precision
  • Uncompromising attention to detail when it comes to units, notation, and the logical structure of a proof
  • Self-motivated and reliable when working independently on technical tasks
  • No prior AI or machine learning experience required

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality review workflows
  • Proficiency with computational tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL
  • Background in research, academic publishing, or physics education

Why Join Us

  • Work on high-impact AI projects in collaboration with leading research labs and AI teams
  • Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you, on your own schedule
  • Freelance autonomy with meaningful, intellectually stimulating work
  • Gain direct exposure to how frontier AI models are trained and evaluated
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
