People and Performance Partner

Hatch

About Us.

The ASE Group is a social enterprise delivering life skills, entrepreneurship and employment programs to young people and small business owners across Australia. We’ve worked with close to 300,000 around Australia. We have office locations in Brisbane and Sydney, however have staff that operate nationally. This role is Brisbane based.

This role is PEOPLE. In every sense of the word. We grew from four teenagers in an office to a team of full-time, casual and contractor staff around the country. We move fast, care deeply and hold ourselves to a standard that people genuinely feel when they walk into our world. (read more here! ase.edu.au)

Our values

#1 Energy. Bring authentic energy and positive momentum. Be above average, have fun and enjoy the journey.

#2 Share the WOW. Deliver experiences that exceed expectations. Amazing work changes people’s lives.

#3 Solve and Learn. Take ownership, get creative, learn fast and be accountable for the impact you create.

#4 Be Real. Mean what you say. Communicate directly, build trust and over-communicate so no one’s left guessing.

The Role.

This role sits at the intersection of HR and people development. It's not a traditional HR role and it's not operational - it's both. You'll own the people side of ASE end-to-end: hiring, onboarding, performance, development, culture and the day-to-day experience of being part of this team. Alongside that, you'll help the organisation communicate better, run smoother and grow without losing what makes it special.

Your role is the connective tissue of ASE - the person who makes sure our people are looked after, our communication is clear and our organisation runs like it should as we scale. You'll work directly alongside the CEO, Co-Founder and Director of Programs across the three divisions of ASE

You're not here to manage the programs themselves, rather you’re here to support the people that deliver them. You hold the standard, you spot the gaps and you're the kind of person who makes things better simply by being in the room.

If you've worked with young founders before, you already know what this means. Things move fast, decisions get made quickly and the strategy might look different on Friday than it did on Monday. We need someone who doesn't need a lot of structure handed to them before they can move. If you thrive when you're trusted to figure it out - you'll love it here.

Who We Are

Our team is genuinely committed and works hard because they care about what we’re building. There’s a real openness here. Ideas get heard, people are trusted to own their work and leadership is accessible.

We also take looking after each other seriously. That means regular check-ins and actually asking how people are doing because that matters to us. When you’re in an environment that moves this quickly, you have to be intentional about the people in it.

It’s not perfect and we don’t pretend it is. Things change fast and sometimes the environment is chaotic. But the team we’ve built is one of the best things about ASE and we’re not willing to let that slip as we grow. That’s exactly why this role exists.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Own the full recruitment process - job descriptions, screening, interviews and hiring recommendations across QLD and NSW
  • Build and run a structured onboarding framework so new team members feel prepared, welcomed and set up for success
  • Establish and maintain a consistent check-in schedule with all staff.
  • Create personalised development plans with clear pathways for skill growth, wage increases and bonus eligibility
  • Manage all performance reviews, providing direct feedback and addressing issues before they compound
  • Serve as the trusted primary point of contact for people managers on all HR matters across the employee lifecycle
  • Manage employee relations matters end-to-end including performance, conflict and sensitive conversations
  • Support change management by partnering with the leadership team to plan and communicate organisational changes with clarity
  • Track and celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and team milestones — the small stuff is part of the culture
  • Support the CEO and Co-Founder with team bonding and culture initiatives across both states
  • Travel to Sydney periodically to check in with the NSW team in person

Internal communications

  • Act as the central communication point between leadership and the wider team - nothing important gets lost or misread
  • Attend division meetings across Employment, Entrepreneurship and AIIL to stay informed and help connect the dots
  • Make sure every team member actually understands what’s happening across the organisation, not just the people closest to leadership
  • Support the CEO and Co-Founders in communicating priorities into clear direction for the wider team.

Organisational Coordination

  • Ensure ASE's HR foundations are solid and compliant - contracts, policies, leave entitlements and employment obligations across QLD and NSW
  • Build and document internal processes that actually get used - not policy for policy’s sake, but systems that make the team better and actually get DONE.
  • Regularly assess how things are running, identify inefficiencies and make improvements without waiting to be asked
  • Develop how-to guides and training resources that help staff build the skills they need as we grow
  • Keep your own admin airtight and ensure the organisation always has what it needs, when it needs it

What We’re Looking For

You’ve done something like this before. You’ve worked in a senior people role and you know the difference between a process that looks good and one that actually works. You hold yourself to a high standard without needing to be reminded and you’re as comfortable in a hard conversation as you are running a team day.

  • Senior P&C, HR or Chief of Staff experience
  • Sharp eye for detail - “near enough” is not a phrase you use
  • Strong communicator across all levels of a team
  • Able to coach and grow staff and the executive team - building leadership capability, not just managing people
  • Builds trusted relationships with managers and coaches them to accelerate their growth as leaders
  • Coaches managers through complex people challenges across performance, conflict and difficult conversations
  • Direct, honest and comfortable with accountability
  • Multi-site coordination across QLD and NSW
  • Self-managed, organised and on top of their own admin
  • Builds systems that last and gets things done

The kind of person who will thrive in this role:

  • Calm under pressure - when things get chaotic, you’re the steadying presence, not another voice adding to the noise
  • Not reactive - you think before you respond, don’t carry things personally and know the difference between something urgent and something that just felt urgent
  • An empathetic professional - you can pivot from a high-energy brainstorm to a sensitive 1:1 with a staff member.
  • Proactive with a can-do attitude - you don’t wait for a to-do list. You see a gap, connect with the right people and fix it
  • Has a genuine sense of humour - you work hard, you HAVE FUN!! doing it and you’re genuinely enjoyable to be around
  • Adapts quickly - things change fast here and you make a call with the information you have
  • Steady in ambiguity - you don’t spiral when the plan shifts

Bonus points: You’ve worked alongside young founders before (iykyk). You understand the pace, the pivots and what it takes to keep a team grounded when everything around you is changing. You know that “near enough is good enough” isn’t a thing here.

From The CEO

“We’ve built something pretty special here and now we need someone who can help us protect and grow it. I need a real A-player - someone with experience, great judgment and genuine care for people. Someone who coaches rather than just manages, builds systems that ACTUALLY gets used and holds the standard without being asked. I'm great with operations, details and understanding the ins and outs of every project - and we have some incredible people here who are just as detailed. I'm also a very honest person. I call it like it is, I move fast and I fit a lot into one day. I want to find someone I can trust and who understands the expectations and standards that have got us to where we are today. I want to learn from this person as much as I want them to learn from us. It's important to me that our team has fun whilst they're on this journey with us.

The culture of ASE is made up of great people and is everyone's responsibility, but we need someone to lead the charge as we scale, you will be a big part of that!”

Location: Full-Time Based in our Brisbane offices. Periodic travel to Sydney required. You’ll be across both QLD and NSW teams so flexibility and strong communication are non-negotiable. Our team usually has 1 WFH day per week.

Salary: This is a new role and there’s flexibility here but we expect this to be around $100-120K including super. We want someone great and we’re happy to build a bonus and incentive structure for outstanding outcomes. We’re a team of 16–18 FTE in social enterprise, so we don’t have corporate budgets - but if you’re contributing big time, we want you to win big time too. Send through your salary expectations and preferred structure and we’ll work something out!

Please consider applying even if you don't meet 100% of what’s outlined
