The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is Australia's independent rule maker and adviser for the National Electricity Market, natural gas markets and related retail markets. It facilitates energy rule changes, carries out reviews and provides the nation’s Energy Ministers with advice on the design of regulatory and energy market arrangements.

About the Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to join the AEMC Data & Analytics team. As an Energy Market Analyst you will be working with a team of experienced data analytics professionals to support embedding analytics across the organisation by developing internal training and creating a central analytics dashboard, accessible to all staff.

You will be supporting policy development through high-quality market modelling, including forecasting prices, dispatch, and reliability outcomes, while developing novel techniques to simulate emerging market dynamics.

You will also enhance modelling flexibility and cost-efficiency by exploring and implementing alternative market modelling tools and supporting the long-term strategic focus.

Key Responsibilities

Market Modelling and Analysis

  • Utilise PLEXOS, Python, and other modelling tools to perform market modelling in support of policy projects.
  • Conduct forecasting of prices, dispatch, and reliability outcomes and develop novel techniques to better simulate emerging market dynamics.
  • Analyse NEM data from a range of sources to support policy projects, including the development of models, charts, and dashboards.

Platform and Tool Development

  • Identify and integrate new data sources into the analytics platform and create analytics products such as apps or dashboards.
  • Explore and implement alternative market modelling tools to increase flexibility and reduce reliance on expensive, outdated platforms.
  • Support the development of machine learning models and broader AI solutions.

Organisation Upskilling

  • Develop and deliver internal training courses to upskill staff in data visualisation and analysis.
  • Build and maintain an 'AEMC analytics dashboard' to support staff across the organisation with their policy projects

About You - we are looking for candidates with

  • At least 2 years' experience with coding languages such as Python or R, and data technologies like SQL or Power BI .
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with a demonstrated ability to explain complex analytical results to a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to work effectively independently and within a team to deliver project outcomes.
  • A strong background and interest in analysis or modelling, combined with an understanding of energy markets.
  • Flexible and innovative problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working in the NEM and specific experience in electricity price or reliability forecasting is desirable.
  • Practical experience with PLEXOS or other energy market forecasting platforms and Data science skills, including the building of Machine Learning (ML) and AI models, is desirable.
