The Role

We are seeking a highly capable Senior Legal Counsel to join our team in Hobart, providing expert legal advice across a broad range of commercial, regulatory and operational matters.

This is a fixed-term, 12 month position based in Hobart.

Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, you will act as a trusted advisor to the business, delivering strategic and pragmatic legal guidance to support TasPorts' objectives.

This is a diverse, hands-on role where you will:

• Provide timely, high-quality legal advice across commercial, corporate and regulatory matters

• Draft, review and negotiate complex contracts and agreements

• Support major projects, procurement activities and infrastructure initiatives

• Advise on governance, risk management and compliance matters

• Manage disputes and engage with external counsel where required

• Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders across the business

About You

You are a commercially astute legal professional with strong technical expertise and a collaborative approach.

You will bring:

• Significant post-qualification experience (ideally 7+ years) in-house and/or in private practice

• Strong experience in commercial contracting, corporate law and/or infrastructure, energy, or government sectors

• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills

• The ability to balance legal risk with business objectives

• A proactive, solutions-focused mindset

Essential requirements

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Law

• Eligibility to hold a Practising Certificate issued by the Law Society of Tasmania

• Current Driver's Licence

• Ability to obtain and maintain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)

Desirable

• 7 + years' post-qualification experience as a legal practitioner in a commercial environment (in house or private practice).

• Good working knowledge and governance, risk and compliance frameworks.

• Demonstrated experience advising on construction and infrastructure projects, commercial property developments and IT software procurements.

• Highly developed negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
