The Role
We are seeking a highly capable Senior Legal Counsel to join our team in Hobart, providing expert legal advice across a broad range of commercial, regulatory and operational matters.
This is a fixed-term, 12 month position based in Hobart.
Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, you will act as a trusted advisor to the business, delivering strategic and pragmatic legal guidance to support TasPorts' objectives.
This is a diverse, hands-on role where you will:
Provide timely, high-quality legal advice across commercial, corporate and regulatory matters
Draft, review and negotiate complex contracts and agreements
Support major projects, procurement activities and infrastructure initiatives
Advise on governance, risk management and compliance matters
Manage disputes and engage with external counsel where required
Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders across the business
About You
You are a commercially astute legal professional with strong technical expertise and a collaborative approach.
You will bring:
Significant post-qualification experience (ideally 7+ years) in-house and/or in private practice
Strong experience in commercial contracting, corporate law and/or infrastructure, energy, or government sectors
Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
The ability to balance legal risk with business objectives
A proactive, solutions-focused mindset
Essential requirements
Relevant tertiary qualification in Law
Eligibility to hold a Practising Certificate issued by the Law Society of Tasmania
Current Driver's Licence
Ability to obtain and maintain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC)
Desirable
7 + years' post-qualification experience as a legal practitioner in a commercial environment (in house or private practice).
Good working knowledge and governance, risk and compliance frameworks.
Demonstrated experience advising on construction and infrastructure projects, commercial property developments and IT software procurements.
Highly developed negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
