AEMO’s System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation, supporting AEMO’s mission of designing a sustainable energy system that provides affordable, safe and reliable energy for all Australians. Within System Design, the Future Energy Systems department seeks to identify and plan for emerging challenges and key transition points in the energy transition.

The Engineering Strategy team sits within Future Energy Systems and seeks to deliver AEMO's transition planning strategy for system security. This includes development of the annual Transition Plan for System Security (TPSS) and delivery of strategic technical workplans to progress the Engineering Roadmap to 100% Renewables.

About The Role

The Senior Engineer plays a lead role in delivering technical advice to support the long-term security and reliability of the National Electricity Market (NEM). This includes contributing to the development of the TPSS, leading transition planning and engineering roadmap activities, overseeing power system studies and data analysis, coordinating initiatives to improve power system and market design, and providing technical leadership across the team.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Lead identification, assessment, and resolution of emerging power system challenges through transition points, including risk assessment, mitigation, and driving organisational or regulatory change initiatives.
  • Lead internal and external stakeholder engagement, providing strategic advice to support an integrated AEMO-wide approach.
  • Coordinate power system studies and investigations into key transition events (e.g. high renewable penetration), applying insights to improve operational and planning processes.
  • Facilitate development of AEMO positions on future technical needs and regulatory reforms, coordinating multi-disciplinary teams across the organisation.
  • Develop and deliver reports, recommendations, and presentations for Executive, Board, and external audiences, translating complex technical information into clear, accessible insights.
  • Deliver projects and assignments to agreed scope, timelines, quality standards, and budget.

What You Will Bring To The Role

Education

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (preferably in Electrical Engineering with a power system focus) or equivalent relevant discipline or work experience

Experience and Knowledge

  • Proven ability to coordinate multidisciplinary projects across a range of power system operational and planning issues.
  • Strong capability to prepare, review, and finalise high-quality technical documentation and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse, interpret, and clearly summarise complex data and findings.
  • Proactive, self-driven, and outcomes-focused, with the ability to build and maintain strong internal and external working relationships.

Desirable

Strong experience in the energy industry, with exposure to power system design and operation, and proficiency in power system analysis tools such as PSS/E and PSCAD/EMTDC, including interpreting study outcomes. Solid understanding of electrical engineering principles across transmission, distribution, and generation, as well as power system and electricity market data, with the ability to apply this knowledge to practical scenarios.
