Marketing Director
Starboard Maritime Intelligence
**We're open for this role to be based anywhere in Sydney (AU) or NZ (Wellington preferred**
We're hiring a Marketing Director to build and scale one of the most strategically important marketing & revenue engines in defence tech.
Starboard Maritime Intelligence fuses satellite imagery, vessel tracking data, radar and other sensor inputs with AI to deliver real-time maritime intelligence - protecting subsea cables, detecting illegal fishing, monitoring sanctions evasion (and more!).
We're helping governments, defence agencies and infrastructure operators detect suspicious behaviour at sea and act before incidents escalate.
Founded in New Zealand and operating globally after a successful Series A, Starboard's technology is already trusted by organisations across 30+ countries, safeguarding over 840,000 km of subsea cable infrastructure.
The difference you'll make
This is not a brand-led role. It's a revenue and GTM-led role with a marketing title.
Reporting to the Chief Commercial Officer, you'll play a key role in owning the global GTM strategy and turn marketing into a measurable, pipeline-generating engine. This focus explicitly includes market development, customer acquisition, pipeline development, and revenue expansion, covering the entire cycle from point of entry and campaign management into integrated workflows, customer journeys, and lifecycle management to prove CAC:LTV and other metrics tied to driving revenue.
You'll inherit light infrastructure - HubSpot, marketing agencies and existing resources - so the brief is to assess the gaps, fix the structural puzzles, and move fast. This is a player-coach seat: you set the strategy and you'll build our global growth with your own hands.
What you'll do
- Lead Starboard's global GTM strategy across Defence & Intelligence (our core market) and Critical Maritime Infrastructure
- Industrialise the revenue engine - the workflows, automation, attribution and data loops that move marketing past vanity metrics into measurable revenue
- Run parallel-track, multithreaded ABM into FVEY defence accounts and high-value commercial targets, in lockstep with Sales from day one
- Drive SQLs, pipeline penetration and deal velocity - and prove it with CAC:LTV and the metrics that actually move revenue
- Own sales enablement and field readiness - playbooks, technical assets and validation materials for complex, multi-stakeholder sovereign deals (MEDDPICC-aligned)
- Sharpen the company narrative - clarity on who we sell to and how we say it, localised across UK / US / APAC stakeholders
- Build influence through PR, thought leadership and policy engagement across UK, US, AU and broader FVEY markets
- Hire and grow a lean team over time and manage agencies and partners - scaling headcount sustainably to revenue
What we're looking for
- 10+ years in B2B SaaS marketing with a proven track record building enterprise revenue engines that generate pipeline
- Hands-on player-coach - you set strategy and execute it yourself; this is not a pure people-management seat
- Demonstrated success running enterprise ABM and key-account marketing into government, national-security and/or regulated enterprise buyers
- Strong systems thinker - comfortable across connected marketing stacks, automation, attribution and the data loops behind them
- Builder mentality - thrives in ambiguity, enjoys fixing complex structural puzzles, comfortable in long, multi-stakeholder procurement cycles (MEDDPICC or similar a plus)
- Mission-driven - motivated by deploying big data and AI to protect global oceans, secure supply chains and deliver strategic intelligence advantage
Nice to haves
- Direct government / defence / national-security marketing experience (a genuine sweet spot, not essential)
- Exposure to dual-use, deep-tech, ISR, geospatial, critical infrastructure or maritime domains
- Experience working across UK / US / APAC stakeholders and localisation needs
- Experience taking outsourced work in-house and building marketing ops from the ground up
Why join us?
Do work that genuinely matters - intelligence that protects nations, supply lines and critical infrastructure
Build a global marketing function from the ground up, exactly the way it should be built
High ownership, high trust, direct access to the CCO and exec team
One of the fastest-growing tech companies in NZ and Australia - validated PMF, runway secured
Competitive base + bonus (AU and NZ), with ESOP potential for the right person
A note on eligibility (strict requirement)
Because of the nature of our work with restricted data, all applicants must:
- Have held permanent residency or citizenship for 10+ years in NZ, AU, CA, UK or US
- Be able to obtain a security clearance at any level, at any point during employmen
- Be willing to undergo a security / police check
