Financial Controller - Systematic Hedge Fund
AE Capital
About AE Capital
We are a Melbourne-based systematic hedge fund and FinTech business with more than 10 years of operating history, working with multi-billion dollar US managers through offshore separately managed accounts (SMAs).
We are seeking a hands-on Financial Controller to join our established operations team and lead our finance function in a flexible part-time role.
This is a rare opportunity to work at the intersection of Australian corporate finance and global hedge fund infrastructure, with direct exposure to Tier 1 US hedge funds, prime brokers, and leading international financial institutions.
While our preference is for someone with prior Financial Controller or senior finance experience, we are also open to an exceptionally driven, high-calibre finance professional who is ready to step up into this level of responsibility.
The Role
You will take ownership of the finance function while working closely with an experienced operations team that supports fund operations, counterparties, and investment structures. You will interact regularly with internal staff and a wide range of external stakeholders, including hedge funds, prime brokers, administrators, and advisors.
The role suits someone who enjoys being hands-on, working closely with others, and contributing to a high-performing but practical small business environment. This is not a narrow corporate role; it requires someone willing to roll up their sleeves, dive into detail, and do whatever is needed across a broad range of finance and related operational matters to help the business run well.
Key Responsibilities
– Own and manage the corporate accounting function, including financial reporting, cash management, and audit coordination
– Support the financial oversight and operation of offshore SMAs and Australian unit trust structures
– Work directly with US hedge funds, prime brokers, administrators, and banking partners
– Build effective working relationships with internal stakeholders across the business, providing clear financial insight and support where needed
– Help ensure compliance with relevant Australian and international regulatory requirements, including AFSL, AUSTRAC, NFA, and related obligations
– Assist with the setup and ongoing operation of investment structures and mandates
– Improve finance processes, controls, and reporting as the business continues to develop
About You
– Proven experience as a Financial Controller or in a senior finance role, or the clear capability to step up into this level of responsibility
– Practical and hands-on, happy to dive into detail and do whatever is required in a small business setting to get things done
– CPA, CA, or equivalent professional qualification
– Strong grounding in Australian corporate accounting standards
– Experience in financial services, funds, or capital markets is highly regarded
– Understanding of hedge fund operations, prime brokerage, or managed accounts is preferred but not essential for the right candidate
– Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal staff and external counterparties
– Strong analytical judgment, attention to detail, and a practical problem-solving mindset
Why Join Us?
– Established Melbourne business with more than a decade of operating history
– Join an experienced operations team rather than building in isolation
– Direct exposure to sophisticated hedge fund and institutional market infrastructure
– Flexible part-time arrangement in a casual but professional culture
– Strong opportunity for either an experienced finance leader seeking flexibility, or an outstanding high-potential candidate looking to accelerate into a broader finance leadership role over time
