5G Core and Critical Communications Lead Engineer
BAI Communications
Design and deliver a private 5G core powering mission‑critical rail communications on one of Australia’s most significant infrastructure projects.
WHY BAI COMMUNICATIONS
It’s an exciting time to be part of BAI Communications. Building on our achievements in broadcasting, telecommunications and critical communications, we continue to expand our operations, helping connect people and support communities.
We operate one of the world’s most extensive broadcast networks, delivering fully managed television and radio services to 99% of the Australian population. During crises such as natural disasters, national broadcasters depend on BAI to maintain vital communications, while emergency services trust us to keep them connected and informed.
As 5G technology transforms connectivity, BAI is leveraging global experience to enable comprehensive coverage in challenging environments—buildings, tunnels, stadiums, and high-density areas. This expertise positions us at the forefront of intelligent, connected infrastructure development across Australia.
Our acquisition of Titan ICT has strengthened our mission-critical capabilities, adding deep expertise in mining, resources, and energy industries. This expansion enables us to deploy robust solutions across Australia’s most demanding operational environments.

LET’S EXPLORE THE ROLE
This is a rare opportunity to lead the design and delivery of a private 5G standalone core network supporting mission‑critical rail communications across a major metro project.
You’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring reliable, high‑availability communications for operational voice, group calls and emergency services. Working at the intersection of telecommunications and critical infrastructure, you’ll partner closely with vendors, engineering teams and client stakeholders to translate operational needs into robust technical solutions.
From architecture through to integration and acceptance, your work will directly influence safety‑critical systems that enable rail networks to operate efficiently and securely. This is a 24-month FTC role.
Key Responsibilities
- Design 5G standalone core architecture, including network slicing, QoS and resilience strategies
- Define technical requirements for mission‑critical communications (voice, group and emergency services)
- Oversee vendor solution design, ensuring alignment with performance, safety and contractual requirements
- Evaluate and recommend 5G core and communications platform solutions for procurement and delivery
- Manage vendor technical engagement across design, integration and commissioning phases
- Lead interface definition across rail subsystems, including rolling stock and control centres
- Review and approve architecture, design documentation and test procedures
- Coordinate and produce end‑to‑end design documentation across project stages
- Support integration, testing and site acceptance activities across complex operating environments
- Advise on future technology evolution and upgrade pathways for rail communications systems
LET’S HEAR ABOUT YOU
You bring deep experience in telecommunications engineering with a strong focus on core network architecture and critical communications systems.
Your background includes designing or integrating 5G or LTE core networks, with a solid understanding of how these platforms support high‑availability, safety‑critical environments. You’re confident working across complex vendor ecosystems, translating operational requirements into detailed technical specifications and holding delivery partners accountable.
You will also demonstrate:
- Expertise in 5G core architecture for standalone or private network deployments
- Strong knowledge of QoS, network slicing and priority bearer design for critical services
- Experience with mission‑critical communications platforms (e.g. MCPTT, MCData, MCVideo)
- Understanding of IMS/SIP signalling and service architecture principles
- Capability in integrating broadband and legacy communications systems
- Proven experience managing vendors through design, integration and delivery phases
- Ability to interpret complex system requirements and produce high‑quality technical documentation
- Tertiary qualification in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or similar
- Extensive industry experience across telecommunications or mobile network engineering
Experience within rail, transport or public safety communications environments will be highly regarded.
