Senior Account Manager – Healthcare Advertising

$95,000 salary package inclusive of superannuation.

We’re looking for a Senior Account Manager, who knows healthcare and knows how to run key accounts seamlessly.

What you’ll do

A Senior Account Manager (SAM) in a healthcare advertising agency acts as the primary link between the agency and its clients sitting at the intersection of creativity, science and regulation, focusing on flawless delivery for all agency jobs, nurturing long-term relationships and driving revenue growth. A SAM must be able to expertly navigate a highly regulated environment and creative excellence with strict medical compliance standards. They act as the bridge between pharmaceutical brand managers and the medical writing team, supporting the senior team in leading strategic planning of campaigns, overseeing and delivery of projects plus management and mentoring of junior account management staff.

Key Responsibilities

Client Relationship Management:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all day-to-day relationship functioning, ensuring client satisfaction and proactively resolving issues.
  • Building strong trusted relationships with brand, marketing, medical and compliance stakeholders.
  • Lead client meetings, status calls, and presentations with confidence

Project management and campaign oversight:

  • Deliver end to end project management across key accounts, different brands and different projects, including receipt of brief from client, estimating, budget management, internal staff briefings, timelines and approval of jobs via client systems.
  • They must ensure seamless delivery ensuring work is delivered on time, on budget, and within regulatory frameworks.
  • Own timelines, scopes, budgets, and resourcing plans
  • Brief internal teams clearly and strategically, translating medical and regulatory requirements into actionable creative direction
  • Anticipate risks, manage scope creep, and resolve issues before they escalate
  • Scientific Briefings: Translate complex healthcare briefs into clear creative direction for creative, editorial and digital teams that respect the technical constraints of the health sector.

Uphold Regulatory Compliance & Medical Review:

  • Ensure all campaign materials—from digital ads to clinical white papers—comply with MA code (Medicines Australia Code of Conduct edition 20) guidelines and the Therapeutic Goods Advertising Code.
  • Coordinate medical/legal/regulatory (MLR) review processes and approvals
  • Maintain accurate documentation and version control across all deliverables
  • Manage Medical KOL Liaison: Collaborate with medical experts and spokespeople to translate complex clinical data into meaningful "behaviour-change" stories for patients and HCPs.
  • Support Strategic Brand Stewardship: Act as the brand champion for their portfolio, leading long-term planning, supporting to translate client goals into actionable marketing strategies and growth plans.

Stakeholder Management:

  • Manage relationships with diverse stakeholders, including pharmaceutical brand managers, medical affairs teams, and legal reviewers.

Business Development:

  • Identify organic growth opportunities within existing portfolios.

Team Leadership:

  • Mentor junior account managers and coordinate cross-functional teams (Creative, Media, Medical and Production).
  • Model best-practice account management and agency values

Strategy and Contribution:

  • Contribute to brand and campaign strategy development
  • Support new business pitches and credential presentations
  • Stay across healthcare industry trends, therapeutic landscapes, and regulatory environments

Required Skills & Qualifications

Experience (essential):

  • Currently in a SAM role.
  • Typically 3–6+ years in account management, specifically within a healthcare advertising agency.
  • Experience (desired):
  • Exposure to both HCP and consumer health campaigns
  • Experience mentoring junior team members
  • Exposure with talent management/influencer management.

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or a Science-related discipline (e.g., Biology, Pharmacy) are highly preferred.

Skills:

  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written skills for high-level client presentations and internal briefing.
  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail: Must be able to multitask and manage a variety of clients across various therapeutic brands. Must have extreme attention to detail to ensure medical accuracy.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to analyse market trends, consumer data, clinical data to provide actionable business insights.
  • Tools: Microsoft suite, proficiency in CRM software like Veeva Promomats and project management platforms e.g.Trello, Guru or similar.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Client & Account Performance

Objective: Maintain strong client relationships and grow account value.

  • Achieve an average client satisfaction score of ≥8/10 (or equivalent) across formal or informal client feedback per quarter
  • Retain ≥95% of assigned accounts annually
  • Identify and progress at least 2 qualified upsell or organic growth opportunities per account per year
  • Meet or exceed agreed annual revenue targets for assigned accounts by ±5%

Project Delivery

Objective: Deliver work on time, on scope, and with minimal disruption.

  • Deliver ≥95% of projects on time against agreed timelines each quarter
  • Deliver ≥90% of projects within approved scope and budget per quarter
  • Reduce internal rework and avoidable revisions by 10% year-on-year
  • Escalate project risks or scope changes within 2 business days of identification.

Compliance & Quality

Objective: Ensure all work meets healthcare regulatory and quality standards.

  • Maintain 100% compliance with relevant healthcare codes and regulatory requirements at all times
  • Achieve ≤10% MLR re-submission rate due to avoidable errors per quarter
  • Maintain accurate documentation and version control with zero audit-critical errors
  • Ensure all materials receive required approvals prior to release, with zero breaches

Financial Management

Objective: Manage commercial performance and profitability.

  • Maintain average project margins within ±3% of agreed targets per quarter
  • Submit accurate monthly revenue forecasts within ±5% variance
  • Ensure 100% of billable work is invoiced within 30 days of project completion
  • Minimise fee write-offs to <2% of assigned account revenue annually

Collaboration & Team Leadership

Objective: Strengthen team performance and capability.

  • Achieve an average internal stakeholder feedback score of ≥8/10 per quarter
  • Provide structured mentoring or coaching to junior team members at least once per month
  • Demonstrate consistent leadership behaviours with no substantiated team conduct issues
  • Support onboarding and development of new team members within their first 90 days

Strategic Contribution

Objective: Add strategic value beyond day-to-day account management.

  • Contribute to at least 2 strategic initiatives (brand planning, campaign development, innovation projects) per year
  • Participate in ≥75% of relevant new business pitches and organic growth initiatives
  • Demonstrate improved understanding of assigned therapy areas through ongoing learning and application in client work
