The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Senior Program, Budget and Compliance Officer, to provide a critical role within Stolen Generations Repatriations Unit.

This is a prioritised role for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, who will be given priority consideration as per the special measures provision of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.

About The Business Unit

The Aboriginal Justice Group of the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) is committed to driving systemic change in the justice system, to connect, support and deliver better outcomes for the Aboriginal community. The group works in partnership with Traditional Owners and the Victorian Aboriginal community to embed the principles of self-determination in the justice sector.

The SGRU was established to implement the Package to help address the trauma and suffering caused by the forced removal of Aboriginal children from their families, culture and Country. The Senior Program, Budget and Compliance Officer will be responsible for leading and developing key internal business processes and systems and support the Manager, Policy, Strategy and Operations to ensure the effective delivery of the Package.

About The Role

This role requires strong communication skills in working with Aboriginal people who have lived experience of trauma and an in depth understanding of both the principles of cultural safety, and the gravity of this reform for impacted Aboriginal Victorians. The role also requires resilience, empathy, and adaptability and may involve dealing with material that can be challenging and distressing.

Some Of Your Duties Will Include

  • Provide authoritative advice on legislative and policy obligations, including identifying and managing compliance risks and issues.
  • Analyse financial performance and provide strategic advice on risks, pressures, and funding requirements.
  • Drive robust governance frameworks, including oversight of Advisory Committee processes, briefings, and decision-making protocols

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated experience applying legislative policy within program delivery, including interpreting requirements and embedding compliance controls, monitoring and reporting mechanisms.
  • Strong financial and analytical capability, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial oversight, with the ability to interpret data and monitor program expenditure and liabilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal Community, both society and culture and the issues impacting on it.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of the Victorian Aboriginal Community.

Qualifications

  • A qualification in project management, public administration or a related discipline/experience is desirable.
