About the role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Technical Manager to join our highly accomplished Business and Private Client Advisory division, which supports a range of small, medium and large private businesses and family groups, along with some not-for-profit and foreign owned businesses. We offer a wide range of services including accounting and tax compliance, business and tax advisory, structuring, superannuation, wealth management and transactional services.

The Senior Technical Manager is an integral member of the BPCA division and is the division’s trusted tax technical specialist. This role requires deep, current expertise in taxation law (and related accounting standards where relevant) and the ability to interpret, apply and communicate technical outcomes in a practical, client-focused way. It also provides specialist internal advisory support to Partners, Directors, Principals and staff across BPCA on complex tax matters, supports technical positions on client files, and contributes to the development of firm tax technical capability through coaching, training and guidance. The Senior Technical Manager also forms an important conduit between the BPCA division and the specialist Tax division, facilitating escalation and collaboration on higher risk or specialist matters. While the role may involve technical review of compliance work, the core focus is on technical accuracy, risk identification, and strengthening tax technical capability across the division.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide specialist internal tax technical advisory to the BPCA division (all levels), including responding to ad hoc technical queries and supporting complex client matters and technical positions (including ATO reviews, audits, objections and investigations where required)
  • Lead the uplift and standardisation of tax technical capability across BPCA by developing practical guidance, precedents and approaches to common and complex tax issues
  • Apply expertise in taxation law and relevant accounting standards to technically review accounting and taxation work, identify technical risks/issues, and ensure recommendations and outcomes are technically sound and appropriately supported
  • Provide coaching and technical guidance to Senior Staff, Assistant Managers and Managers on complex tax issues, including how to research, document and support technical positions
  • Act as a conduit between BPCA and the firm’s specialist Tax division, facilitating escalation, collaboration and resolution of specialist or high-risk technical matters
  • Design and deliver internal tax technical training (and targeted coaching) for Senior Staff, Assistant Managers and Managers to build capability in core tax areas, technical reasoning, and application to client scenarios
  • Contribute to BPCA technical leadership by coordinating tax technical updates, facilitating technical discussions/forums, and promoting consistent, high-quality technical interpretation across the division
  • Attendance at Management group meetings and conferences, as required to support technical knowledge sharing and divisional alignment
  • Other duties as required by the Firm such as attendance at training, contribution to internal learning programs and assistance with special technical projects

Skills and experience

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in a Business Services environment in a Chartered/CPA accounting practice with exposure to a range of small, medium and large client groups across a cross section of industries & investment activities
  • Degree qualified and fully qualified as a CA/CPA
  • Demonstrated exposure to a wide range of accounting and taxation issues with varying degrees of complexity, including advisory and interpretive work (not just compliance).
  • Strong tax technical expertise and a commitment to staying current with legislative change, ATO guidance and professional developments. Demonstrated ability to analyse complex issues, form technically robust positions, and clearly communicate outcomes and implications to Partners and staff
