Health and Safety Manager

We have an opportunity for an experienced Health and Safety Manager to join our team in Gladstone and support our Central Queensland operations. Based at our cement manufacturing plant, your remit will include the plant, our mine at East End, the road transport team in Gladstone and Rockhampton as well as our small fly ash operations and the rail interface between different sites.
You will be on the leadership team for the Gladstone region, with visibility and engagement with everyone from fitters and operators through to executives, board members and shareholder visitors. Your real impact will be realised through your connection to the team, the leaders and the ongoing support to elevate the capability and performance of safety and health for the region. You will be empowered to make real change and able to leverage the broader HSE team across the business.
Your Opportunity
You will report to the Operations Manager – Gladstone, with connection to the Group Safety & Sustainability Manager. In this role you will:
- Coach, mentor, assist, challenge and guide site leaders in safety, health and related issues
- Provide professional advice to leaders in risk management, using internal frameworks
- Drive improvements in the safety culture by championing issues and engaging all employees and contractors in dialogue
- Provide advice on requirements to manage and implement SHEQ Management System
- Ensure relevant training needs analyses are maintained for compliance training and support delivery
- Communicate and facilitate the implementation of safety best practices
- Recommend and implement strategic and tactical safety improvements
- Personally lead investigations for all high-level incidents
- Monitor business specific safety legislation and regulatory requirements to ensure it is incorporated into corporate and site systems, build capability of the site teams
- Plan for successful site shutdowns and provide technical safety input to other projects
- Manage industrial hygiene, employee health, return to work and rehabilitation
- In partnership with senior leaders, liaise with relevant government and industry bodies
- Support the internal/external audit program, SHEQ data reviews and reporting needs
What You’ll Bring
- Experience in a senior health and safety role within a complex manufacturing, construction, transport and/or mining industry
- A practical, pragmatic and hands on approach to health and safety
- Workplace and process safety; chain of responsibility and rail/maritime safety interfaces
- Ability to influence and achieve outcomes through others
- Demonstrated communication skills and the ability to coach, develop and build capability in others
- Understanding and interpretation of Workplace Health and Safety, and Environmental Legislation
- Experience in maintaining a management system certified to ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001
- Understanding of budgeting and project management
- Experience with injury management/return to work
- Qualifications including Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Applied Science and/or Masters in Health and Safety are ideal, but not essential
- Lead Auditor, ICAM Lead Investigator (or equivalent) and/or Cert IV Training and Assessment qualifications are preferred
