Special Counsel

Peppercorn Recruitment

Most senior insurance litigators eventually reach the same point.

They still enjoy the legal complexity. They just become less interested in the traditional law firm model wrapped around it.

The role

We are working on a genuinely different opportunity for a senior defendant insurance lawyer to move into a role sitting far closer to insurers, claims strategy and commercial decision-making.

This is not a standard private practice role. And it is not quite an in-house role either.

Instead, it sits in the space between the two, combining sophisticated claims work with direct insurer involvement and strategic advisory input across complex liability matters.

The work

• early claims strategy and reserving input

• coverage and liability analysis

• direct engagement with insurers and insureds

• oversight of litigated matters and panel firms

• high-level advisory work across complex claims portfolios

The focus is less about managing file volume and more about influencing outcomes.

About you

• Senior Associate or Special Counsel level

• from a defendant insurance background

• experienced across PI, PL, GL, financial lines or related liability matters

• commercially minded with strong strategic judgment

This role would particularly suit a lawyer who enjoys the thinking side of insurance law and wants greater involvement in claims strategy without stepping away from sophisticated work.

On offer

• top-of-market salary + bonus

• hybrid working model

• highly autonomous senior role

• sophisticated insurer-side work

• no traditional partnership pressure or law firm politics

For the right lawyer, this can be a very compelling long-term platform and a materially different way to practise insurance law.
