Senior Associate - Employment Law

Sydney CBD

BlackBay Lawyers is a specialist litigation firm where Senior Associates do more than assist, they advise, strategise and lead.

We act in complex commercial disputes, employment litigation and defamation matters for ASX-listed companies, founders, boards and high-profile individuals. We were named Boutique Law Firm of the Year 2024, were finalists in 2025, and are again in 2026.

We are seeking a Senior Associate who is comfortable with responsibility, direct client relationships, and autonomy within a high-performing litigation firm. This role is suited to an employment lawyer who is technically excellent and commercially sharp.

The Role

At BlackBay, Senior Associates are trusted with meaningful responsibility. You will:

  • Run complex employment law matters end-to-end, with genuine authority
  • Act as the day-to-day strategic adviser to employers and executives
  • Advise clients directly, boards, founders, HR leaders and senior executives
  • Lead contentious employment matters, including Fair Work proceedings and disputes
  • Provide strategic advice on high-risk terminations, executive exits and workplace issues
  • Take an active role in negotiations, mediations and critical decision-making
  • Mentor junior lawyers while remaining hands-on in significant matters
  • This is not a leveraged back-end role. You will be trusted to exercise independent judgment

Who this role is designed for

  • Senior Associates (approximately 4–8 PQE in employment or workplace law)
  • Litigators who: want control over matters, not just tasks
  • value direct client ownership
  • are confident making strategic decisions
  • expect progression to follow performance, not tenure
  • You are comfortable being relied upon, by clients and partners

In return you will receive

  • Complex, high-stakes litigation
  • Direct access to Partners and decision-makers
  • Active support to build your professional profile, reputation and market presence
  • The autonomy, opportunity and resources to develop your own book of clients
  • Remuneration and progression aligned to contribution and impact
  • A collegiate, ego-free culture with high standards
  • A clear long-term career path in a firm scaling deliberately and sustainably
