Network Engineer
Hamilton Barnes
Network Engineer | Field Deployment Role (Cisco Meraki, Multi Vendor Environment)
6 month contract with strong potential for permanent conversion
Onsite Canberra based role
You are joining a field engineering team delivering network infrastructure deployments across multiple active sites. This is a hands on role where you are responsible for physically building, configuring, and bringing enterprise networks into production.
The environment is primarily Cisco Meraki based, but you will also work across mixed vendor environments including Aruba, Fortinet, and Palo Alto depending on site architecture and legacy footprint.
This is not a single vendor support role. It is real world network deployment work across varied enterprise environments.
Day to day reality
You start on site reviewing deployment scope and confirming readiness of infrastructure.
Your work is a mix of physical installation and live configuration. You are racking switches, access points, and firewall appliances, validating structured cabling, and ensuring physical network layers are correctly implemented before activation.
Once infrastructure is powered, you configure and validate network services across Cisco Meraki environments, while also interacting with Aruba, Fortinet, or Palo Alto systems where required depending on site design.
You are working across VLANs, trunking, routing fundamentals, and wireless deployment tasks, ensuring systems align with standardised network designs.
During deployment you troubleshoot real time network issues including Layer 1 cabling faults, Layer 2 switching issues, VLAN misconfigurations, wireless connectivity problems, and firewall policy impacts on traffic flow.
As environments are cut over from legacy infrastructure, you support transition activities ensuring minimal disruption and validating service continuity across users and systems.
You close the day by documenting configurations, updating asset records, and preparing for the next deployment phase or site rollout.
What you will be doing
- Physical deployment of network infrastructure including racking, stacking, and structured cabling validation
- Configuration of Cisco Meraki switching, wireless, and security appliances
- Exposure to Aruba, Fortinet, and Palo Alto environments depending on site requirements
- Implementation of VLANs, trunking, and basic routing configurations
- Support for network cutovers from legacy infrastructure to modern environments
- Troubleshooting Layer 1 to Layer 3 issues in live deployment scenarios
- Wireless access point deployment and basic validation of coverage and connectivity
- Ensuring consistent configuration standards across multiple sites
- Maintaining accurate documentation of network assets and configurations
- Working closely with engineering and project teams during rollout delivery
Environment and technology
- Cisco Meraki switching, wireless, and security appliances
- Aruba switching and wireless environments
- Fortinet firewalls and security appliances
- Palo Alto firewall environments (where applicable)
- LAN and WAN enterprise networking across multiple sites
- VLAN based segmentation and standardised network architecture
- Mixed legacy and modern infrastructure during migration and rollout phases
What we are looking for
- Strong hands on experience in enterprise networking environments
- Cisco Meraki experience preferred, with exposure to Aruba, Fortinet, or Palo Alto highly beneficial
- Solid understanding of networking fundamentals including VLANs, trunking, routing, and switching
- Experience in physical network deployment including racking, stacking, and structured cabling
- Ability to troubleshoot Layer 1 to Layer 3 network issues in live environments
- Experience with wireless deployments and basic RF or coverage validation
- Comfortable working onsite in field based engineering roles
- Strong attention to detail when applying standardised configurations across sites
- Ability to work independently while following structured deployment plans
Why this role is different
This is a delivery focused network engineering role, not a support desk function.
You will be directly involved in building and activating enterprise network infrastructure across live environments, working across multiple vendors and technologies rather than a single locked ecosystem.
This creates real exposure to how enterprise networks are physically deployed, integrated, and transitioned into production environments.
High performers in this role typically progress into permanent engineering positions as the deployment programme expands.
