Primary objective

In consultation with senior staff, supervise, conduct and be responsible for the establishment, implementation, operation and evaluation

of a biting insect survey and control program in a range of wetlands in the wider Darwin area, especially focused on mosquitoes.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide high level technical input into the planning and implementation of biting insect surveillance and control programs and conduct

and supervise on-ground management of these programs in a range of wetlands.

2. Responsible for the supervision and conduct of all day-to-day technical operations including trapping, identification, recording, and

reporting associated with the biting insect programs.

3. Responsible for the organisation, supervision and conduct of biting insect monitoring and control, using 4WD vehicles, all-terrain

vehicles, helicopters and insecticides.

4. Collect, collate and assist in the interpretation of biting insect data associated with the program and prepare technical reports.

5. Collaborate with stakeholders, local government, the public and other professional and technical staff in all operational aspects of

biting insect program investigations.

6. Responsible for the training of technical staff in all laboratory and field aspects, including mosquito taxonomy.

7. Assist with overall biting insect taxonomy

8. Be responsible for the operation and maintenance of specialised technical equipment, laboratory equipment and machinery.

9. Produce and maintain relevant technical procedures.

10. Provide general technical support to the Medical Entomology unit in all aspects of biting insect surveillance and control

11. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures related to the work being undertaken to

ensure high quality and safe service at the workplace.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Diploma in biological science or relevant work experience, with extensive knowledge and experience in the field of biting insect

surveillance and control

2. Extensive experience with biting insect identifications and taxonomy and demonstrated knowledge and experience with data

management and reporting.

3. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate with a range of land-use stakeholders,

commercial organisations and the public.

4. High level experience with the use of computers, databases and geographic Information Systems or equivalent

5. Proven ability to work as a team leader, communicate effectively and provide timely and effective feedback.

6. Self- motivated and work under minimal supervision with a high degree of accuracy and reliability.

7. Current NT driver’s licence Class C or equivalent.

8. Ability to interact with people of diverse cultures.

Desirable

1. Knowledge of Department of Health protocols and procedures

2. Experience with ground and aerial mosquito surveillance and control in a range of wetlands and understanding of associated OH&S

requirements.
