The Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) is a 10-bed short stay acute medical unit within a busy regional hospital, providing rapid assessment, treatment, stabilisation, and multidisciplinary management for patients presenting with acute medical conditions. The unit plays a critical role in improving patient flow and delivering timely, patient-centred care for patients requiring short-term admission, investigation, and clinical decision-making.
The MAU manages a broad range of acute presentations across General Medicine and medical sub-specialties, supporting early intervention, clinical escalation, discharge planning, and coordinated care in collaboration with inpatient teams, Emergency Department clinicians, and allied health services.
As a Registered Nurse, you will deliver safe, evidence-based nursing care to acutely unwell patients in a fast-paced assessment environment while working collaboratively within a skilled multidisciplinary team. You will be responsible for ongoing assessment, clinical monitoring, escalation of care, discharge coordination, and supporting timely patient flow in line with local policy and NSQHS standards.
This role requires participation in a seven-day rotating roster, including morning, evening, and night shifts. You will work closely with medical officers, allied health professionals, nursing staff, and support services to ensure coordinated, high-quality care throughout the patient journey.
An eligibility list will be created for future permanent full-time, part-time, temporary full-time, and temporary part-time vacancies.
Why Join Our Medical Assessment Unit?
We are seeking motivated and compassionate Registered Nurses who thrive in a dynamic clinical environment and value teamwork, patient-centred care, and professional practice.
In this role, you will:
- Provide evidence-based nursing care within an acute assessment and short stay medical environment
- Develop advanced assessment, escalation, and clinical prioritisation skills
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to support timely patient management and discharge planning
- Contribute to patient flow and safe transition of care across the organisation
- Support and guide less experienced staff
- Contribute to a positive workplace culture built on collaboration, respect, accountability, and continuous improvement
