About The Role

We are seeking Waste Attendants to work in our Waste Operations team, which is located at the Boroondara Waste and Recycling Centre operated by the City of Boroondara.

The City of Boroondara includes the well-established inner eastern suburbs of Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell, Canterbury, Surrey Hills, Glen Iris, Mont Albert, Ashburton Balwyn and Balwyn North.

The team is responsible for weekday collection of hard, household, recyclable and organic waste. Our team members enjoy a variety of work in densely populated residential areas and in a very busy operational work site. Our customers are residential and small businesses.

Key Responsibilities Of The Role Include

  • Starting the day bright eyed and bushy tailed at 5:00am you will do bin collection with one or two other team members.
  • You will communicate very well with the Waste Collection Driver and with one other Waste Attendant if two of you are rostered.
  • Waste Attendants are to make bins accessible to our various waste collection vehicles.
  • You will ensure bins are emptied and returned to the positions they are collected from.
  • Any interaction with the public will be to provide information or advice, or to report back to your Coordinator Waste Operations and/or Leading Hands any concerns.
  • Duties at the Depot include completing driver day sheets, reporting faults, operating plant equipment, vehicle maintenance - cleaning, fuelling, and greasing so vehicles are ready for the next run.
  • Performing your work in a safe manner and abiding by Council’s standard operating procedures for bin collection are high priorities.

About You

This is what a successful candidate looks like:

  • At a minimum this role requires basic understanding of mechanical plant and equipment.
  • Your OHS skills includes adherence to wearing PPE and ensuring the community members are alerted to any dangers in approaching the Waste Collection vehicle.
  • You will join a cohesive team where everyone engages in teamwork.
  • It is in your nature to be a productive team member, and we want you to be a part of ‘team finish’ philosophy - we start together, we work together and we finish together.
  • This also means you have a high work ethic and you are responsible - when you are at work, you do work!
  • You have excellent relationship skills - you treat your manager and your team members with respect. This is very important to us.
  • You communicate well on the job with all staff, and you keep your Coordinator Waste Operations and/or Leading Hands always updated.
  • You will use your OHS skills to ensure your work site is secure from hazards and is safe for you, your colleagues and the public, and promptly report hazards.

Additional Information

  • Our Waste Operations teams work Monday to Friday, starting at 5am and ending at 1:06pm.
  • Your ordinary hours of work are 38 hours a week.
  • Overtime will be paid only if you work more than 38 hours a week.
  • The advertised salary is inclusive of all Public Holidays which are worked.
  • Public Holidays not worked are Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Years Day and are paid at normal time.
  • ‘Make up’ days are prior to or after these 3 Public Holidays and are on a Saturday only. Appropriate overtime will be paid on these 3 days.
  • The AFL Grand Final Parade Day is worked and will be paid at the appropriate overtime rates.
