Who We Are

The Motor Trades Association of Australia is the national peak body representing over 70,000 automotive businesses employing more than 380,000 Australians. From vehicle repair and retail to recycling, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles, MTAA is the unified federal voice for a sector that underpins communities and regional economies across the country.

The Opportunity

Based in Canberra and reporting to the MTAA Board, the Executive Director holds responsibility for national strategic advocacy engaging ministers, departments, and regulators on the policy issues that matter most to automotive businesses: including EV transition, skills and apprenticeships, insurance, franchising, access to repair information, and competition policy.

The ED also plays a critical coordination role across MTAA's federated structure, working closely with state and territory association CEOs to align positions and deliver coherent national campaigns. This role calls for someone who earns trust across a complex network and moves people toward shared goals.

You'll Be Well Suited If You Have

• Senior experience in a peak body, industry association, government, or a minister's office
• Demonstrated success influencing policy outcomes with tangible results to point to
• The ability to lead through influence in a federated environment, where alignment is built, not assumed
• Strong governance instincts and board-level communication skills
• An established Canberra presence or a genuine commitment to relocate

Knowledge of the automotive or mobility sector, or a closely related industry, will be viewed favourably.
