The Role
As a Senior HV Substation Electrical Engineer will play a key role in the design, engineering, and delivery of high-voltage substation projects connected to utility-scale renewable generation and transmission networks. This position will provide technical leadership across the full project lifecycle, from concept and feasibility through detailed design, construction, commissioning, and handover.
The role requires strong technical expertise in HV substation design, coordination with multidisciplinary stakeholders, and the ability to ensure compliance with relevant utility and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
- Lead the design and technical delivery of HV substations (typically 132kV–500kV), including AIS and GIS configurations.
- Prepare and review key engineering deliverables, including:
- Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
- Protection and control schematics
- General arrangement layouts
- Equipment specifications and datasheets
- Earthing, lightning protection, and insulation coordination studies
- Perform and review power system studies, including load flow, fault level, and protection coordination.
Project Delivery
- Provide engineering support across project phases including feasibility, FEED, detailed design, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
- Act as technical authority for substation engineering matters.
- Review and approve contractor and consultant designs and technical documentation.
- Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning activities.
Stakeholder Management
- Liaise with utilities, network service providers, contractors, OEMs, and internal project teams.
- Support grid connection processes and ensure compliance with grid codes and utility standards.
- Participate in technical meetings, design reviews, and risk assessments.
Technical & Compliance
- Ensure designs comply with relevant Australian and international standards (IEC, IEEE, AS/NZS).
- Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering standards and processes.
Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related discipline.
Experience
- Typically, 8–15+ years of experience in HV substation engineering.
- Proven experience delivering transmission or utility-scale substation projects (132kV and above).
- Experience working with utilities, EPC contractors, or renewable energy developers.
- Strong understanding of primary and secondary substation systems.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of HV equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, CTs, VTs, and protection systems.
- Experience with substation design standards and utility requirements.
- Familiarity with power system modelling tools (e.g., ETAP, PSCAD, DIgSILENT PowerFactory) is advantageous.
- Understanding of grid connection requirements and commissioning processes.
Desirable Experience
- Experience working on renewable energy grid connection projects (wind, solar, BESS).
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
- Experience managing consultants and engineering contractors.
- Knowledge of Australian utility standards and grid codes.
