Strategic Urban Designer
Hansen Partnership
We’re seeking an experienced practitioner with a strategic design lens to join our growing team. This role sits at the intersection of urban design and strategic planning, and we’re open to candidates approaching it from either direction: an urban designer who is comfortable working across strategic and policy-led projects, or a strategic planner who brings strong spatial thinking and visual communication skills.
You’ll work alongside our directors and a multidisciplinary team of urban designers, planners and landscape architects on a broad range of projects. The role suits someone who enjoys interrogating a brief, asking the right questions, and translating spatial thinking into clear visual communication and persuasive written work.
We’re looking for someone who is technically capable, intellectually curious, and aligned with our values. Someone who can work independently, communicates with care, and is motivated to do great work, both on their own and as part of a collaborative team.
What we’re looking for – Essential
- A Bachelor of Urban Design, Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a related discipline.
- At least 2 to 3 years’ professional experience in practice, with demonstrated ability to contribute to projects that combine urban design and strategic planning thinking.
- Critical thinking, with the ability to ask the right questions and draw out implications from a brief or site.
- An understanding of the role of visual communication in articulating the purpose and key message of a plan, map or diagram.
- Strong written communication, with an appreciation for the difference in tone and scope across design critique, strategic critique and rationale-based writing.
- A working understanding of the Victorian planning system (zones, overlays, policy) sufficient to navigate to applicable provisions and articulate their meaning for a subject site or project.
- Demonstrated experience working independently and managing your own workflow.
- Strong spatial and 3D thinking.
- Competency across the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
What we’re looking for – Desirable
- Exposure to and awareness of Melbourne’s spatial context and an appreciation for the different character of Regional Victorian settings.
- Graphic design and visual communication skills (a baseline is important, with room to grow)
- Project management experience
- GIS translation and spatial analysis skills
- 3D modelling skills (SketchUp, Rhino, or similar)
You'll be joining a tight-knit, values-led team based in Melbourne's CBD. We're urban designers, planners and landscape architects who value integrity, collaboration and quality outcomes. We support each other, enjoy working together, and make time to come together as a team through shared lunches, social activities and other firm events throughout the year.
