Join the South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) Public Health Unit and make a meaningful impact on the health of the community. Based in Liverpool CBD, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside Doctors, Nurses, Epidemiologists, and Data Quality Administrators within a service that includes communicable diseases, immunisation, environmental health, and administration teams. As a Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) in Communicable Diseases, you will coordinate services in collaboration with the Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) and Operations Nurse Manager (ONM) to manage notifiable communicable diseases under the Public Health Act. This includes working closely with key stakeholders across the district and community to improve health outcomes and drive prevention-focused initiatives across South Western Sydney.

Are You the Right Fit?

As a Clinical Nurse Consultant, you will practise in accordance with the NSW Health CNC domains ( http://www1.health.nsw.gov.au/pds/ActivePDSDocuments/IB2017_002.pdf), providing strong clinical leadership to support the ongoing development of practice. You will deliver expert clinical advice to patients, carers, and healthcare professionals in communicable diseases, while leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical practice models, including new treatments, technologies, and therapeutic techniques. You will initiate and apply local research findings, identify education needs, and contribute to the development and delivery of specialised training programs. Your role will involve conducting surveillance, supporting data entry, managing enquiries, and monitoring communicable diseases in line with NSW Ministry of Health policies, including the Notifiable Diseases Manual. You will also participate in outbreak investigations, public health responses, and disaster exercises, while contributing to strategic and operational planning and ensuring effective delivery of specialist consultant services. All practice must align with legislation, common law, Registered Nurse Standards for Practice, Code of Professional Conduct, and Code of Ethics, with a commitment to addressing unsafe or unprofessional practice in the workplace.

Selection Criteria

To help us assess your suitability for the role, please tell us as much as you can about yourself in response to the questions below.

  • Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience.
  • Approved post graduate nursing qualifications in a field relevant to the specialty field or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the organisation.
  • Demonstrated evidence of strategies used to maintain current knowledge of clinical practice advances and research in the specialty area of communicable diseases.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply expert knowledge to provide safe compassionate quality care and advice that is culturally responsive to key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and engage with a range of key stakeholders and a multidisciplinary health care team to identify and ensure responsiveness and flexibility to service provision to meet community needs.
  • Demonstrated capacity to interact with others in a personable and professional manner and personally resolve conflicts when they arise.
  • Demonstrated evidence of the use of critical thinking as it relates to the delivery of advanced evidenced based nursing care focused on communicable diseases.
  • Demonstrated understanding and participation in risk management, work health and safety and quality improvement in the workplace.
  • Proven ability to consult, review, and develop, both new and existing policies and procedures within the relevant specialty of communicable diseases.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and undertake communicable disease surveillance, investigations and response.
