Principal Legal Advisor, Commercial and Energy

VicGrid

The Opportunity

The Principal Lawyer - Commercial and Energy is a voice shaping how VicGrid operates. We are looking for people who are motivated to help build and shape our team culture from the ground up. The role reports to the Director, Commercial - Legal, and will partner across the business to deliver sharp, commercially minded legal advice, supporting complex transactions, procurement, and the navigation of energy and regulatory frameworks. This is a role where strategy meets execution, with real impact on how we deliver Victoria's energy future

What you will deliver

  • Deliver sharp, timely legal advice across commercial, energy and regulatory matters, with practical, outcomes-focused guidance, leaning into challenges with curiosity and a proactive mindset.
  • Partner with the Director, Legal - Commercial and the General Counsel on end-to-end commercial, corporate, procurement and contracting matters.
  • Help shape and support the Victorian access regime under the NEVA, advising on implementation, interpretation and operation.
  • Uplift legal capability and governance, driving precedents, tools, external counsel management, and compliance across FOI, privacy and data.
  • Thrive on working across the business, building strong relationships and helping shape a collaborative, high-performing team culture.

What you will bring

  • Proven experience delivering commercially focused legal advice across commercial, corporate and/or regulatory matters, ideally within a highly regulated environment or government context.
  • Strong capability in commercial contracting, procurement and risk management, including navigating public sector frameworks and governance requirements.
  • Familiarity with the NEVA and the National Electricity framework is a nice-to-have, but curiosity and the ability to quickly build expertise matter just as much.
  • Experience designing and implementing regulatory frameworks or other reform initiatives (statutory or organisational), with the ability to translate legislation or broader policy intent into practical tools and guidance.
  • Admitted Australian lawyer (or eligible) under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Victoria).
