About the Role

This position is specifically designed to meet the training requirements, over three years, of doctors commencing physician training with the RACP in 2027. We accept applications from current interns or higher- but please note this position is not accredited as a PGY2 Certificate year; It is accredited with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). We are looking for enthusiastic Medical Foundation Year BPTs to join our team, pursue physician training and serve our wonderful, diverse community.

Why you should come to Northern Health?

Northern Health is a large, rapidly growing, dynamic health service. As such, we have a large number of subspecialty rotations at Foundation BPT year level to broaden your clinical experience and knowledge, and a well-established BPT program. Our physicians are known for their enthusiasm, friendliness and engagement in training, supported by experienced Directors of Physician Education (DPEs). We are keen to support and train the next generation of physicians- not only to pass the exams, but also to be great clinicians with all the ‘soft’ skills to achieve this. We are extremely proud of our positive workplace culture at Northern- with a flat hierarchy, a focus on support and education, and have an expectation that all of our doctors, at all levels, model this. As a BPT at Northern, you can expect your consultants to know your coffee orders (even if you don’t drink coffee.)

Education is prioritised at Northern- Foundation Year BPTs have their own dedicated weekly teaching program, along with unit-based teaching sessions. Northern Health is part of the Central North West Consortium for physician training - this encompasses Northern Health, Austin Health, Bendigo Health, Wimmera Health and Echuca Hospital. All trainees will get invaluable experience with regional rotations at our CNW consortium partner sites over the three years of training. The consortium has a long tradition of providing an excellent physician training program with excellent exam results- the written and clinical exam prep is an integrated joint education program across all sites. As such, trainees get exposure to clinical cases and tutors at all sites. Every trainee will attend multiple clinical short case examination days, mock exams, have a 1:1 consultant exam mentor as well as access to over 20 face to face tutorials a week across sites and other lecture programs.

On top of this we have built a formal professional development program to complement the exam prep- with training in Clinical decision making bias, Communication skills workshops and Performance coaching, as well as a formal ‘stepping-up’ program to skill-up for registrar level roles.

We offer the option of three-year contracts to all successful applicants. For Foundation Year BPTs with more clinical experience (eg- PGY3s and above) the option of stepping into junior medical registrar positions later in their Foundation Year is available too- we take a lot of effort to create individualised rosters to match preferences and skillsets.

Finally, Northern is growing, and whilst consultant life may seem far away, it will come around quickly- future career opportunities are here!
