The Provisional Fellow in Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a leadership role within the Maternity and Gynaecology Service, John Hunter Hospital. They coordinate and manage the day-to-day service requirements for Junior Medical Officers within Maternity and Gynaecology Services at John Hunter Hospital. This involves attendance at strategy and finance meetings, a pastoral role in relation to trainees, and close involvement with the Training Supervisors and Integrated Training Program Coordinator to ensure training requirements are met.

The clinical role will satisfy the RANZCOG Advanced Training Module Generalist Obstetrics or Advanced Obstetrics Advanced Training Modules (ATM) as well as the opportunity to progress towards a DDU qualification. It also would fulfil the requirements of the Essential O&G ATM. The Provisional Fellow takes a leadership role in ward rounds and management of complex antenatal or postpartum inpatients. They participate fully in the after-hours rosters covering both Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The role includes a contribution to daytime Birth Suite, caesarean lists, initial maternity assessment and planning visits, and complex medical antenatal clinic coverage.

The Maternity and Gynaecology Service has 48 Obstetric beds (with an additional 15 flexible beds) and performs 4,300 deliveries per annum.

  • Advanced ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent communication, clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  • Demonstrated advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences. In particular, proven ability to communicate and transfer skills and knowledge to students in professional and engaging manner.
  • Commitment to participating in teaching, training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of Education and Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a view to also enhance the knowledge of others.
