About the Role

The Public Intoxication Response Support Worker provides respectful, trauma-informed, and culturally safe support to individuals affected by alcohol-related intoxication in public spaces. The role involves assertive outreach, safe transportation, monitoring clients within Rumbalara’s Sobering Service, de-escalating challenging situations, and connecting individuals with appropriate health, housing, and community supports using a harm minimisation approach.

About You

Qualifications and Registrations

Relevant qualifications (e.g., alcohol and other drugs, community development, social work) is desirable.

Knowledge and skills

  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and maintaining culturally safe practice while addressing systemic racism and unconscious bias.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide harm reduction interventions and support people experiencing intoxication, crisis, trauma, or challenging behaviours.
  • Ability to work calmly and confidently both independently and within a multidisciplinary team including AOD, Mental Health, peer workers, and partner agencies.
  • Strong understanding of crisis response strategies including managing distress, overdose, panic attacks, suicidal behaviours, and psychotic episodes.
  • Ability to work within a mixed service delivery model including rostered shifts and on-call requirements as needed.
