The Role

The acquisition of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades to come.

As part of the new internal communications function within the Chief Operating Officer Division, the Internal Communications Officer will help strengthen agency wide communication and support staff understanding of the Australian Submarine Agency’s priorities under the AUKUS Optimal Pathway.

In this APS 6 role, you will contribute to planning and producing high quality internal communication products, ensuring messages are clear, timely and consistent. You will assist with intranet updates, develop content for staff channels, coordinate messaging across Groups, and support communication activities during organisational change. You will work closely with subject matter experts and senior leaders to translate complex information into accessible staff ready content, helping maintain an informed and engaged workforce.

APS 6 Internal Communications Officer will:

  • Draft and produce internal communication products, including all staff updates, intranet content, newsletters, Q&As and key messages.
  • Support the delivery of communication plans for Agency priorities and organisational change.
  • Assist with intranet content development and maintenance, ensuring information is accurate and accessible.
  • Help maintain aligned and consistent messaging across Groups.
  • Support town halls and internal events, including preparing talking points and content.
  • Contribute to rapid internal communication responses during emerging issues.
  • Help uplift internal communication capability through templates, guidance and practical tools.

About our Team

The Internal Communications function is a new capability within the Chief Operating Officer (COO) Division in the Australian Submarine Agency (ASA). The COO Division provides and integrates essential strategic, legal and enabling support services to the ASA. It plays a central role in outlining how the Agency delivers results against its two key activities under the Corporate Plan: delivering nuclear powered submarines in accordance with the Optimal Pathway and within government approved costs, and exemplifying best practice nuclear stewardship in line with Australia’s domestic and international obligations.

The COO Division achieves this through strong governance and performance frameworks, people management, costings and budget analysis, government and public relations, risk oversight and legislative alignment. As part of this environment, the Internal Communications team will help strengthen agency wide messaging, supports senior leaders, and ensures staff are informed and engaged. You will work collaboratively across ASA Groups to help build an effective, consistent and trusted internal communications function.
