Engineering Manager – HV Substations

Sydney, NSW (with some regional travel)

About the company

Our client is a proudly Australian-owned, ISO-accredited engineering business with a strong presence across Australia and New Zealand. They support the local energy sector through Australian-based engineering, local project delivery, and a robust network of global technology partners. Their capability spans grid studies, high voltage infrastructure design and equipment supply, through to EPC delivery, installation, testing, commissioning and whole-of-life support for utility and renewables customers.

The opportunity

As Engineering Manager, you will lead the engineering function across high voltage (HV) projects, including HV substations, in Sydney and regional NSW. You will manage a small team and provide both technical and delivery leadership across design, construction and commissioning, while maintaining strong interfaces with clients, Network Service Providers (NSPs) and delivery partners. Partnering closely with the Project Director, you will align engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning activities to drive safe, compliant and on-schedule outcomes across the full project lifecycle. You will also provide oversight across primary, secondary and civil/structural scopes, ensuring design intent is translated into buildable packages and that testing, energisation and handover meet required standards.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a high-performing engineering team delivering greenfield and brownfield HV substation projects across Sydney and NSW.
  • Own engineering delivery from concept and detailed design through procurement support, construction support, testing, commissioning and energisation.
  • Provide technical governance, including design reviews, hold points, calculations and coordination, interface management and independent verification where required.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary scopes (primary plant, protection and control, SCADA/telecoms, earthing, civil/structural and interface works) to ensure integrated design and safe constructability.
  • Manage engineering interfaces with NSPs (e.g. transmission and distribution network operators), clients, OEMs, EPCs and construction partners, ensuring timely approvals and responses to technical queries.
  • Bring together all parties in the commissioning chain for power plants by managing the complete R2 testing process through to registration.
  • Oversee key deliverables including specifications, drawings, functional design specifications, protection settings philosophy, testing and commissioning plans, ITPs and as-built documentation.
  • Support the Project Director with programme development, resourcing, change management, risk and opportunity management, and reporting.
  • Drive outcomes across safety, quality, schedule and commercial objectives, embedding lessons learned and continuous improvement.

About you

  • Degree qualifications in Electrical Engineering (or a related discipline); CPEng/RPEQ/RPEV (or eligibility) will be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering HV substation and/or energy infrastructure projects within the NEM, including exposure to NSP requirements and outage planning.
  • Strong understanding of the full project lifecycle: design development, procurement, construction support, testing, commissioning, energisation and handover.
  • Working knowledge of relevant Australian and NSW standards and practices for HV substations, including safety in design, earthing, protection, SCADA/telecoms and testing.
  • Proven people leadership experience, including coaching engineers, managing performance and building a collaborative, delivery-focused culture.
  • Well-developed stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to resolve technical and commercial interface issues pragmatically while maintaining a strong customer focus.
  • Clear commitment to HSE leadership and quality management, with a risk-based approach to decision making and strong documentation discipline.
