In this role, you'll:

Reporting to the Director, Financial Planning and Analysis, this role leads a team of four Finance Business Partners and two Finance Analysts and is accountable for the strategic planning, implementation and oversight of Sydney Metro’s annual and monthly SME budgeting processes, as well as the delivery of high-quality management reporting and insights. The position provides expert financial advice to inform complex decision-making and plays a key role in shaping business strategy, planning and forecasting to ensure organisational performance and long-term financial sustainability. Through strong leadership and influence, the role drives change, builds capability and contributes to a high-performing, outcomes-focused finance function. You will be joining a high-impact team within the Finance and Commercial Division at Sydney Metro, partnering across the organisation to shape strategic decision-making and deliver strong business outcomes. As part of a function responsible for best-in-class Financial Management, IT, Risk and Commercial services, the team works closely with operational and project leaders to drive financial performance, strengthen governance and influence outcomes across programs with multi-billion-dollar budgets. Acting as trusted advisors to senior stakeholders, we embed finance as a strategic partner to the business—supporting informed decisions, improving financial discipline and enabling delivery of major infrastructure outcomes.

About You

You are a highly credible and influential leader who builds strong, trusted relationships with senior stakeholders across the organisation and external partners. Through proactive engagement and clear communication, you position finance as a strategic advisor to the business—shaping decisions, driving accountability and enabling improved commercial and operational outcomes. Your leadership style promotes collaboration, transparency and high performance, ensuring stakeholders are equipped with the financial insight needed to deliver organisational priorities.

You are required to have full membership of a recognised professional accounting body, with tertiary qualifications in (Accounting, Commerce, or related discipline), or demonstrated equivalent experience.

Key accountabilities include

  • Lead the Sydney Metro internal budget process by providing enterprise leadership of the end to end budget cycle, setting principles, governance and operating rhythms that guide divisions across a complex matrix of business and project environments. Ensure budgets are reviewed, strategically aligned, internally consistent and approved through the Executive pathways.
  • Oversee forecasting and financial planning by leading Sydney Metro’s FP&A function and embedding a disciplined, driver based and risk informed forecasting approach. Strengthen forward estimates, scenario planning and the identification of financial risks and opportunities to support confident executive decision making.
  • Deliver high-quality financial performance reporting by overseeing consolidated internal and external reporting with clear insights on trends, variances and risks. Continually enhance data quality, reporting frameworks and analytical depth for the Senior Management Committee (SMC), Chief Executive and Board submissions.
  • Provide strategic financial insights by translating complex financial and operational data into clear recommendations that inform executive decision making and operational performance. Lead challenge, assurance, negotiation and resolution of finance related issues and risks across business and project stakeholders. Shape strategic narratives that elevate financial performance conversations for senior leaders.
  • Strengthen financial governance and reporting frameworks by setting and maintaining enterprise wide financial governance, ensuring compliance with regulatory, accounting and internal policy requirements. Oversee data integrity, SAP usage and controls that support consistent, efficient, audit ready financial management.
  • Manage the Finance Business Partner network and broader leadership responsibilities by acting as the primary conduit for internal financial management, ensuring alignment across the complex matrix of business and project stakeholders. Lead, develop and coordinate the Finance Business Partner cohort, manage escalations, and foster a high performing, collaborative finance partnering culture.
