Job Summary

The BESS Solutions Engineer will be the technical lead for end‑to‑end BESS solutions across the pre‑sales, tendering and execution phases, with a focus on projects connected at distribution and sub‑transmission levels. The role combines customer‑facing solution development, detailed engineering, execution and grid connection support to ensure our integrated BESS offerings and proposals are technically robust, commercially competitive, and compliant with Australian regulatory frameworks.

Main Responsibilities and Tasks

Key responsibilities

Pre‑sales, tenders and proposals

  • Lead technical review of RFQs/RFTs/RFIs for BESS opportunities in large C&I and small‑scale utility segments.
  • Develop complete pre‑sales solution concepts including system architecture and sizing.
  • Prepare the technical content and overall composition of proposals.
  • Participate in customer technical meetings, presentations and workshops as the primary technical interface during the sales cycle.

Solution design and system engineering

  • Own the BESS solution definition from PCS point of connection through to battery racks.
  • Perform and/or coordinate technical studies including load and generation profiling, energy throughput analysis and cycling requirements to support business cases.
  • Translate functional requirements into system configurations, control strategies and operational constraints.
  • Review and approve detailed design deliverables produced by internal teams and partners to ensure alignment with the offered solution and standards.

Internal collaboration and continuous improvement

  • Work closely with global product management and R&D to provide field feedback.
  • Contribute to development and standardisation of reference designs, templates, tools and processes for repeatable sub‑5 MW BESS solutions.
  • Mentor junior engineers in BESS design principles, Australian standards, grid connection processes and best practice engineering methods.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant Australian and international standards, NER changes, AEMO guidelines and DNSP technical requirements.

Required qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • 7–10+ years of relevant experience in power systems, renewable energy engineering, with at least 3–5 years directly focused on BESS or inverter‑based resources (IBRs).
  • Demonstrated experience in executing and delivering inverter‑based BESS projects (design‑build, EPC, OEM or developer side) for Australian C&I and/or utility sectors.
  • Proven involvement in grid connection processes within the NEM and preferably WEM as well, including GPS development and AEMO/DNSP engagement.
  • Experience working with OEMs, EPCs, developers delivering grid‑connected renewable / BESS projects from early development through commissioning is highly desirable.

Technical skills

  • Strong understanding of BESS architectures.
  • Deep technical know‑how of leading battery chemistries used in grid‑scale storage with a practical insight into their performance, safety, lifecycle and suitability.
  • Hands‑on experience specifying and integrating Energy Management Systems (EMS) and Power Plant Controllers (PPC).
  • Familiarity with AEMO’s GPS process, NER Schedule 5 requirements and associated AEMO/NSP modelling, validation and compliance expectations for generator connections.
  • Working knowledge of relevant Australian standards and guidelines (e.g. AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 4777, AS 2067, CEC installation guidelines).
  • Proficiency in reading and producing SLDs, protection and control schematics, cable sizing, earthing and lightning protection concepts and equipment specifications.
  • Comfortable using common engineering and office tools and preparing clear technical documentation and reports.

  • Proven ability to operate autonomously as the technical lead while collaborating effectively with cross‑functional and multicultural teams.
  • Structured, detail‑oriented approach to problem solving, with a focus on risk management, quality and safety in design and delivery.
  • Proactive, commercially aware mindset, capable of balancing technical optimisation with cost, schedule and contractual obligations.

Location, travel and reporting

  • Location: Sydney or Melbourne preferred, with a hybrid work model and occasional travel to customer sites, project locations, factories and international meetings.
  • Reporting line: Reports to the Director, BESS Solution Sales, APAC.
  • Travel expectation: Approximately 10–20% domestic travel, with occasional international travel.
