Position Description — Senior Town Planner
Company: Form Planning and Projects Pty Ltd
Location: Hobart, Tasmania (inner-city workspace; flexible hybrid/WFH)
Employment type: Minimum Part - Time (3 days per week/48 hours per fortnight) to Full-Time (9 days/72 hours per fortnight) by negotiation/agreement
Salary: $90,000 to $110,000 AUD per annum + 12.5% superannuation (Full-time equivalent) negotiable depending on experience
Reports to: Company Director

Form Planning + Projects is a small and growing town planning and project management consultancy in Tasmania. We provide practical, high-quality planning advice across statutory and strategic planning, supporting clients to navigate approvals and deliver better development outcomes.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a qualified Town Planner with at least two (2) years’ experience to join our team. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys managing varied projects, providing clear expert advice, and contributing to the growth and direction of a developing consultancy. You will work across development assessment, planning scheme amendments, site planning, project feasibility, and strategic planning projects including structure plans and master plans, with flexibility for hybrid work and working from home.
Current and Recent Projects
You will have the opportunity to contribute to projects such as:
- 1000+ lot subdivision in Greater Hobart (Structure Plan and planning scheme amendment)
- 200+ lot Precinct Structure Plan in Greater Hobart
- Master planning and planning scheme amendment for regionally significant industrial precinct
- Large scale retirement villages (Master planning, planning scheme amendment and permit application)
- Structure Plans
- Open Space Strategy
- Various permit applications for subdivision, commercial and multiple unit development projects
- Advice and project development
What You’ll Do
Statutory planning
- Prepare and manage development applications from enquiry through to determination including co-ordination of other consultants.
- Prepare and/or review planning reports, written representations, and supporting documentation.
- Provide clear, defensible expert planning advice to clients, consultants, and stakeholders.
- Liaise with local councils and referral authorities to progress applications efficiently.
Planning advice
- Undertake site and development feasibility assessments, including constraints and opportunities analysis.
- Provide risk-based planning pathways and approval strategies for projects.
Strategic planning
- Contribute to and lead elements of strategic planning projects, including:
- Structure plans
- Master plans
- Other policy and strategic planning work as required
Business Development
- Actively identify and pursue new business and project opportunities in discussion with Company Directors
- Build client relationships and develop a strong network of industry professionals
Tribunal/Commission related work (desirable)
- Support matters involving the Tasmanian Planning Commission and/or the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT), including preparing evidence and assisting with hearings where required.
What You Bring
Skills and Experience (Essential)
- Tertiary qualification in Town Planning / Urban and Regional Planning (or equivalent).
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in statutory and strategic planning.
- Demonstrated ability to assess development applications and interpret planning schemes in Tasmania.
- Strong written communication skills (planning reports, advice letters, submissions).
- Communicates clearly and confidently in person, actively listens, and adapts verbal style to build positive, professional relationships.
- Works autonomously and shows strong organisation and time management skills; ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Sound judgment and a practical approach to solving planning problems.
Desirable Criteria
- Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) membership (desirable, not essential).
- Experience working with or appearing before the Tasmanian Planning Commission.
- Experience with TASCAT matters and/or preparing evidence for hearings.
- Experience working with GIS
- Experience in graphic design software (e.g. In Design or similar)
- Experience in urban design
