Production Manager

ProFound People

A global technology company developing specialist technical products is looking for a Production Manager to help scale a growing manufacturing activity within its Sydney facility. The business develops complex products used in advanced research, laboratory, test, and manufacturing environments, with products that combine circuit boards, precision components, embedded assemblies, calibration, testing, and software supported operation. Customer demand has increased significantly and the business now needs to move toward a more structured, repeatable, and production led operating model.

This role will focus on turning a technical, R&D style build environment into a more methodical production operation. The successful candidate will lead a team of hands-on production operators and help improve output, workflow, training, process clarity, testing flow, and day-to-day production discipline.

The role would suit someone coming from electronics manufacturing, specialist instruments, technical hardware, defence adjacent products, drones, complex assemblies, or another bespoke manufacturing environment where products are hands-on, technical, and relatively high value. The successful candidate does not need deep specialist product knowledge, but they will need to be comfortable working closely with highly technical engineers and translating technical input into practical production processes.

This is a full-time role based in Sydney. For interstate candidates, relocation is required and a relocation allowance will be provided. For the right candidate, visa sponsorship is available.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day production activity for a specialist technical manufacturing group
  • Manage, support, and develop a team of hands-on production operators and technicians
  • Help scale output from a boutique technical build environment into a more structured production operation
  • Assess current production flow and identify constraints relating to people, parts, equipment, testing, training, process clarity, or shift coverage
  • Improve production planning, operator scheduling, assembly flow, and daily execution across the group
  • Introduce clearer work instructions, build processes, training methods, and production discipline
  • Work closely with engineers to translate technical input into practical and repeatable production processes
  • Support the introduction and structure of additional shift coverage as production demand increases
  • Monitor production output against plan and address issues affecting throughput, quality, yield, and delivery
  • Ensure parts availability, bills of materials, work instructions, equipment readiness, and operator capability are aligned to production needs
  • Support calibration, testing, rework, and failure/debug activities in collaboration with engineering and technical teams
  • Drive practical continuous improvement across manufacturing processes, workflow, training, and team capability
  • Maintain appropriate safety, quality, handling, and production standards across technical and precision assemblies

Requirements

  • Practical manufacturing or production leadership experience within a technical product environment
  • Experience in electronics manufacturing, PCB/circuit board assembly, instrument assembly, technical hardware, or similar complex products
  • Strong understanding of production fundamentals including bills of materials, work instructions, parts availability, assembly flow, testing, bottlenecks, and operator scheduling
  • Experience leading hands-on production operators, technicians, assemblers, or similar manufacturing teams
  • Ability to work effectively in a low-volume, high-complexity, high-mix production environment
  • Comfortable working with engineers and technical specialists in a technically led manufacturing environment
  • Ability to translate technical discussion into practical production action
  • Strong problem-solving capability and the ability to identify what is limiting output across people, process, equipment, parts, testing, or training
  • Pragmatic leadership style with the energy and presence to lead from the front in an on-site manufacturing environment
  • Ability to bring structure and discipline without overcomplicating processes or imposing unsuitable high-volume manufacturing methods
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with production staff, engineers, managers, and broader business stakeholders
  • Willingness to work on site in Sydney and maintain strong visibility across production activity

Desirable but not essential

  • Experience in test and measurement, specialist instrument manufacturing, or complex technical manufacturing environments
  • Background in low-volume/high-complexity electronics, drones, defence-adjacent hardware, specialist equipment, or bespoke manufacturing
  • Experience scaling production output in a growing or capacity-constrained manufacturing environment
  • Exposure to calibration, test systems, automated test equipment, or manufacturing equipment software
  • Experience supporting NPI, production transfer, or the transition of technical builds into repeatable manufacturing processes
  • Understanding of structured quality, traceability, and safety practices in electronics or precision component environments
  • Experience introducing or improving afternoon shift, multi-shift, or staggered production coverage
